Abstract

Either a weight or a spring force can be used to take up slack. The weight of one of the elements (6) typically provides the take up force. The two sides (4, 5) of the link are slightly convergent towards the top and between them contain two wedges. One wedge (6) is attached (7) to the chain (13) and slides along one inner face (5) of the link. The other complementary shaped wedge (9) fits between the first wedge and the other face (4). At the other end of the link is the remaining connecting element (3). If the chain becomes slack, the block (6) slides down and the other block (9) slides down faster. This provides a "gearing" element which causes the parts to lock firmly together when chain tension is reapplied.
