Abstract

A mining machine, rock drill etc., which employs oe or more cutting portions, e.g. a set of picks on a rotary or chain type cutter, has a cylindrical steel rod portion (1) which is retained by a suitable method in a body portion, and carrying a tip (2) of e.g. tungsten carbide, the rod portion having a hole drilled down it, into which fits a sleeve (3) with its end protruding, so that the tip can be connected to it by forcing its hollow end over the protruding portion. The sleeve is a split sleeve. In an alternative design, the hollow tip is brazed onto a spigot on the end of the steel rod.
