Abstract
A semi-permeable membrane in reverse osmosis applicns. is supported on a porous element and sealed at its edges by a toric joint or other type of gasket. The porous element is prevented from distorting too much when the membrane is clamped in its housing, by impregnation of the pores of the porous element in the area where the membrane is in contact with the element and gasket, to make it more rigid. The impregnation of the element can be over the whole or part of the thickness, or can be by hot pressing of the material onto the surface of the element. The membrane may have a support comprising a central impervious metal on which are porous elements of filter paper treated with formo-phenolic resin, having an area in contact with the membrane impregnated with polystyrene 5-75% of their thickness. Used for semi-permeable membranes for treatment of solns. by reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration, e.g. de-salting of sea water or for the treatment of gas mixts. by gaseous permeation. The added rigidity to the support element enables the joint to form a better seal reducing losses between untreated and treated fluids, so that the appts. can work at higher pressure. Wear of membrane is reduced since lack of deformation of support element prevents stretching and tendency to tear.
