Abstract

A non-woven material consisting of a laminated structure combining a mat of discontinuous thermoplastic polymer fibres and a fleece of continuously and arbitrarily deposited, molecularly oriented thermoplastic filaments, has the mat and the fleece bonded at a number of points. Its basic wt. is 0.75-2.5 oz-yd2. The ave. dia. of the filaments in the mat of discontinuous fibres is =10 mu whilts that of the continuous filaments in the fleece if 12-25 mu, the wt. ratio of the mat to the fleece being 0.2-4:1. The separate bonding zone occupy 10-30% of the surface area and are formed without any degree of melting of the continuous filaments whatever; the plasticising temp. of the microfilaments of the mat being 10-10 degrees C lower than that of the continuous filaments. The prod. has exceptional strength characteristics, good feel and draping, and generally, the attractive appearance of woven textiles.
