Abstract

Polymer article counter-acting blood clot formation has a heparinised surface formed by grafting or bonding surface of polymer article with heparin. Surface is activated for reaction with heparin by introducing a CN gp., which replaces an H atom of a free amino- or OH gp. of a hydrophilic polymer, pref. by treating polymer surface with BrCN. Used for blood treatment outside body, e.g., artificial kidneys and O2-enrichment devices. Introduction of body heparin can be avoided. Polymer articles may be a membrane, having a heparinised surface on one side. Hydrophilic polymer may be prepd. from an acetylated cellulose which is de-acetylated to form free OH gps. on surface, or consists of hydrolysed nylon, polyethylene glycol polycarbonate, hydroxyethyl, methacrylate, a polypeptide, e.g., a polyglutamate, or a hydrophilic polymer with OH gps. which can be replaced by amino gps.
