Abstract
An aq soln. of partially reticulated polymer (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol) is mixed in the presence of a catalyst with an element (e.g. dimethylolurea) which provides an aldehyde group to further reticulate the polymer to 5-20%, one part of this mixt. is added to 20-50 pts. of an aq. metal (e.g. Zn, Cd, Ni) salt (e.g. halide, acetate, nitrate, chlorate) soln. at 50-110 degrees C. The mixt. is run into a mould around a conductive chemically inert support (e.g. a metallic grill) such that the mixt. covers a part of the support and the mould temp. is reduced to is not >-20 degrees C. The assembly is removed from the mould and washed with alkaline soln. satd. with an oxide of the metal and with water before being added dried at 20-60 degrees C. Finally the assembly is compressed at 2-10 bars/cm2. The electrodes have good electrochemical and mechanical props. and the risk of forming a short circuit during production is reduced.
