Abstract

The surfaces of articles moulded, pressed, calendered, or extruded from thermoplastics are modified to avoid e.g. blocking, high gloss and poor printability, by incorporating within the polymer a proportion of a surface modifying agent comprising crosslinked polymer particles of ave. size 1-30 mu. The crosslinked polymer particles are prepd. by reacting a prepolymer, pref. polymethyl methacrylate or a copolymer with 20% of an alkylacrylate, dissolved in a mono-unsatd. monomer together with a polyunsatd. monomer as a crosslinking agent. Previous problems - opacity, loss of impact and tensile strength, and cost of maintaining calenders - are avoided.
