Abstract

The purpose of the device is to warn the stockman, wherever he may be, that a sow is farrowing, so that he may take any necessary precautions. The apparatus consists of 3 metal tubes (6) suspended above the ground on two sides and to the rear of a farrowing crate (2) and carrying a weak electric current. When the sow farrows, the piglets brush against the electrified tube, earthing it and modifying the current. The tubes are connected to a low frequency amplifier and oscillator (7 & 8) unit which, when the signal is modified, operates either a sound or a light signal (9) warning the stockman.
