Abstract

Method of reducing metallic oxides directly to the metal comprises heating the oxides by direct electric current induction in a non-oxidising atmosphere in the presence of Mg metal and a slag comprising MgF2 and CaF2. The method applies particularly to difficulty meltable metals such as Ti, Zr, etc and other metals normally prepared via a secondary cpd. The process is less costly and produces the metal as an ingot rather than powder or sponge as in prior art.
