Abstract
To pump a liquid which conducts electricity, such as liquid sodium, esp. in nuclear reactors, it is filled into a space between an outer, tubular electrode and an inner coaxial electrode and a radial current is passed through the liquid at the same time as a magnetic field with force lines parallel to the pump axis; resultant rotation of the liquid is transformed to an axial, pumping thrust by the reaction of the cavity walls contg. the liquid; eg. an Archimedean screw made of insulating material may be formed between the electrodeS. Absence of moving parts eliminates vibration, noise and maintenance problems. The magnetic field may be produced by a superconductor of hyper conductor coil.
