Abstract

1325271 Artificial protein-containing fibres FUJII KEORI KK 4 May 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 13086/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Artificial protein-containing fibres are prepared by melt spinning a product obtained by precipitating a high molecular bonded product of animal fibre protein and nylon from an acid solution. The method involves the steps of (a) dissolving and decomposing an animal fibre in an acid solution (e.g. concentrated H 2 SO 4 ) (b) adding and dissolving nylon staple or powder to the solution of animal fibre protein thus obtained (c) reducing the solubility of the protein and nylon mixture in the solution by the addition of water or dilute acid thereto or by cooling and thus precipitating a high molecular bonded product of animal fibre protein and nylon which is filtered and dried and (d) melt spinning the product thus obtained. The ratio of nylon to animal fibre protein in the product may be 0À3 : 1 and preferably is from 1À5 : 1 to 2 : 1. The product may be blended with a thermoplastic resin (e.g. polyamide or polyester) prior to melt spinning. More effective bonding between the protein and nylon molecules in the high molecular bonded product may be obtained by (a) treating the animal fibre before dissolution in the acid solution with a compound containing active chlorine (e.g. sodium hypochlorite or dichloroisocyanuric acid) or an aqueous solution of peracetic acid, performic acid or hydrogen peroxide to break the disulphide bonds in the cystine groups of the animal fibre; (b) heating and stirring the dissolved animal fibre before adding nylon thereto; or (c) treating the acid solution of the nylon, animal fibre mixture with chlorine gas or iodine (preferably prepared in situ from sodium hypochlorite and potassium iodide respectively). In examples artificial protein fibres are prepared by melt spinning products obtained by dissolving wool, cashmere beard hair, human hair or collagen obtained from feathers or leather in concentrated H 2 SO 4 , adding nylon staple to the acid solution and heating to dissolve the nylon, and diluting and/or cooling the solution to precipitate the product.
