Abstract

Hardening of plate glass sheets is effected by their being fed as a laminated parcel with the plates in a vertical position into a heat treatment furnace, following which they are quenched singly. Pref. the front sheet of the stack is lowered through a vertical quenching chamber, where cold air is blown against both its surfaces after which it is placed on a horizontal roll street underneath, where final cooling is carried out by blowers below the roll street. The plant is small and highly efficient, requiring little capital and yields a superior product on account of the sheets being supported only along one edge.
