Abstract

Centrifuge for continuous separation of liquid and granular solids has a rotor and a screw conveyor rotating relative to one another on a central shaft, with a feed nozzle opening midway along its length. Liquid overflow and solids outlet are provided at opposite ends, and in the clarification zone the screw conveyor is replaced by a perforated drum, of diameter slightly less than that of the rotor, with conveyor scroll formed on its outer surface. The orifices in the drum converge from inside to outside and drum divides clarification zone into a radially inner centrifuge zone, free of stirring effects, and an outer solids conveying zone. Liquid overflow lies inside the inner zone. Used for separation of polymers from solvents, crystals from mother liquors, waste water clarification, etc.
