Abstract

A web emerging from a drafting frame is laid on an adhesive coated carrier web as the latter passes around an axially reciprocating roller which causes the fibres of the drafted web to be laid sinusoidally on the carrier web to improve the cross-strength of the laminate . Following curing of the adhesive around a heated drum, the laminate is folded longitudinally so that the drafted or carrier web portions can be united. Alternatively, the laminte is bonded to a separate such laminate. In modifications, the adhesive can be omitted by using thermoplastic fibres in the drafted web.
