Abstract

Seats made by lining a mould with a suitably tailored furnishing fabric or hide, moulding a contoured layer of foam onto the underside of the fabric and suspending the composite foam and cover moulding on a chain frame or shell so as to leave an air space between the suspended foam-backed cover and the frame or shell. Offers successive and progressive stretching and compression of the cover fabric, the foam backing and the air pocket when accepting loads. Claimed to be lighter and less costly than use of foams with a dense 'self-skinning' surface layer. Use of polyurethane, PVC or 'latex' foams mentioned integral with flexible PVC or other furnishing covers secured to chair frames mechanically or by adhesives or heat sealing. Low pressure permits use of reinforced polyester moulds.
