Abstract

The variable ratio transmission has a speed variator (6-10) giving continuous variation of speed between shafts (2,6). The high speeds are produced by two releasable clutches (2-10 and 13-6) and the low ones from two reducers (2-3-5 and 11-12-13). These are paired, cogged wheels with intermediate coupling sleeves (2,13). Two ratios of these reducers are chosen so that, at maximum reduction between the shafts, disengagement of the couplers and engagement of the reducers produces no change of speed or sense of rotation in these shafts. The variator is symmetrical, with a variation limit p, the ratio of speeds between first and second shafts being 1/p to p, giving a complete range of transmission ratios of p2. A reverse gear is also provided.
