Abstract

A process for the regeneration of coke-contaminated fluid catalytic cracking catalyst, containing catalytically effective amounts of a CO conversion activator, and for the essentially complete catalytic conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, which method comprises the steps of: a) passing to a dense phase catalyst bed in a regeneration zone said catalyst and new contribution regeneration gas with a first flow rate sufficient to oxidize coke in order to produce partially exhausted regeneration gas; b) oxidizing coke under first oxidation conditions including a first catalyst bed temperature of from 3992C to 6772C, to produce regenerated catalyst and partially depleted regeneration gas containing CO; c) increasing the temperature of the catalyst bed from said first temperature to a second temperature from 677ºC to 760ºC; d) passing fresh regeneration gas into the catalyst bed with a second stoichiometric flow rate to essentially completely oxidize C0 to form CO2; e) oxidizing CO in said catalyst bed, maintained under second oxidation conditions including the presence of said CO conversion activator, to produce exhausted regeneration gas; f) analyze exhausted regeneration gas to obtain a measured concentration of free oxygen and compare the measured concentration of free oxygen with a previously determined concentration of free oxygen; and g) thereafter regulating the newly supplied regeneration gas to a third flow rate to maintain the measured concentration of free oxygen equal to the previously determined concentration of free oxygen, thereby ensuring an essentially complete conversion of CO to CO2.
