Abstract

Aerobes are employed to stabilise waste water and/or organic sludge by treating with oxygen or a gas which is rich in oxygen. The fluid contents of a treatment vessel is induced to circulate about a horizontal axis. The contents rotate like a cylinder and there is negligible movement in a central zone arround the axis of rotation. Oxygen or a suitable gas rich in oxygen is injected into this central zone of the fluid. as it rotates. Used for stabilisation of waste water and/or sewage sludge by aerobic treatment, partic. material contg. highly concn. organic matter such as cattle shed drainings sludge from foul sewers and excess sludge from waste water treatment. The organic activity is reduced to a level at which the fluid can be easily clarified by conventional treatment. The fluid is cleaned and stench reduced to make it suitable in preparing agricultural fertilisers. No moving parts in treatment vessel. Remarkably high utilisation of injected oxygen, i.e. 90% to 100% is distilled.
