Abstract
A process for preparing alcohol-sulphonylmethylbenzyl alcohols having the formula **(See formula)** in which; R is straight or branched chain lower alcohol of 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R1 is branched-chain lower alcohol of 3 to 5 carbon atoms, cycloalcohyl or cycloalcohylmethyl, with the cycloalcoyl residue having 3 to 6 carbon atoms; or **(See formula)** R2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R3 and R4 are hydrogen, hydroxy or methoxy; and R5 is hydrogen or methyl, which comprises catalytically hydrogenating a compound of the formula **(See formula)** where R, R1 and R2 are as defined above; optionally followed by conversion of the product into one of its salts.
