Abstract
Procedure for treating aqueous suspensions of red mud and dissolved alumina, to separate the suspended red mud from them, by treating said suspensions with water-soluble acrylic polymers containing at least 80% acrylic acid halves or salts of acrylic acid; characterized in that it comprises using, as an acrylic polymer, an inverted acrylic polymer latex, said latex having been produced by stages A, formation of a water-in-oil emulsion from: 1) water containing, dissolved therein, at least one monomer consisting of at least 80% by weight in acrylic acid or in an acrylic acid salt, thereby producing a monomer phase having a concentration of 30-70 % by weight of said emulsion; 2) an inert hydrophobic liquid; 3) a water-in-oil emulsifying agent in a concentration of 0.1 to 10% by weight; 4) a free radical initiator; B. heating said emulsion under free radical forming conditions, to polymerize the monomers to form an acrylic polymer that is contained in the emulsion; and C.
