Abstract

A process for preparing mixed methacrylonitrile polymers having desirable color and properties of light stability and impact resistance and improved resistance to water vapor transmission and oxygen permeability, characterized in that it comprises: (A) a polymerization graft component having (1) an essentially saturated rubber-like substrate, selected from the group consisting of monoolefin elastomeric polymers and elastomeric polymers of alkyl esters of monounsaturated carboxylic acids, wherein the alkanol alkyl group contains from 3 to 18 carbon atoms and wherein the carboxylic acid contains from 3 to 18 carbon atoms and there are from one to two carboxylic acid groups, said elastomeric polymers containing not more than 10% by weight of a comonomer having multiolefinic unsaturation, and (2) a resinous superstrat formed of a polymer containing 50 to 95% by weight of meta crilonitrile, from 0 to 15% by weight of monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon and from 0 to 40% by weight of polar vinylidene monomer, the total content of ethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer, of said interpolymer, being at least 50% in weight of the same; and (B) a matrix component formed from a polymer of 50 to 95% by weight of methacrylonitrile, 0 to 15% by weight of monovilidene aromatic hydrocarbon and 0 to 40% by weight of polar vinylidene monomers, the content of total ethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer being at least 60% by weight, the rubber-like substrate of the polymerization graft component (A) comprising from 3 to 50% by weight of the polyblend, said polyblend having an oxygen permeability of less than 6.5 cc/645 cm2 24 hours atmosphere-0.00254 cm at 23ºC and a water vapor transmission of less than 8.5 g/24 hours 645 cm2-0.00254 cm at 38ºC and 95% RH (Machine-translation by Google Translate, not legally binding)
