Abstract

Apparatus for forming multi-ply paper comprises, in successively spaced arrangement, paper-forming segments, each segment comprising a first guide roll e.g. 86 in segment S8, a second guide roll 81f, and a stationary guide 83, felt 200 wrapping the first guide roll, and wire 84 wrapping the second guide roll and the stationary guide 83, which stationary guide presents an elongated, stationary, unyielding water-permeable surface, which urges the wire and felt into gradual convergence from initially close spacing, and effects water removal and a fourth guide roll 89 effective to separate the wire run from the felt which carries the web. A number of these segments are spaced along the felt bottom run. The second guide may be a suction box, and is preferably constructed with a plurality of longitudinally closely spaced, transversely extending blades presenting top thin edges to the wire to define the water-permeable surface. The longitudinal shape of the locus of these (blade, edges may define an elongated, non-circular convex curve. The compound web, at the off-running end of a ply-forming segment may pass through a pair of press rolls which may act on the felt carrying the web, or may act on the feltweb-wire sandwich, as shown. In this. latter case, it is preferred to use a plastics forming wire.
