Abstract
A trochoidal-type engine has a two-lobed piston 10 fixed to a hollow rotary-shaft 7 and lodged in a three-lobed cavity within a housing 32, which (when the piston revolves) gyrates orbitally about the shaft axis under the control of two sets of gears 21 meshing with respective gears 6 attached to the shaft. Journals 23 on the housing engage with eccentric bushes in the gears 21, which are carried by bearings 18, 19 secured to a corresponding gearhousing 30. Ports 11, 12 for fuel-air mixture and exhaust gases, respectively, are formed in the piston and connected through the shaft to a carburretter 17 and an exhaust-gas turbine 4. The piston is cooled by air drawn through ducts 8, 8a by a blower 5. A spark-plug 33 is provided in each lobe of the cavity. When the engine is modified to operate as a Diesel engine a fuel injection nozzle is lodged in the piston, Fig. 14 (not shown). Radial seals 38 between the lobes of the cavity engage with the periphery of the piston and are interconnected by axial seals 46 abutting the ends of the piston. The seals and modifications thereof, are described in detail with reference to Figs. 8 to 13 (not shown). A fan 13 driven by the shaft 7 blows air across cooling fins 34, 35. Lubricating oil for the bearings, gears and seals is stored in the housings 30 and pumped through channels 59, 22, 24, 25 associated with each of the gears 21.
