Abstract
Gaseous and solid components are continuously removed from liquid suspensions of fibres, e.g. of cellulosic pulp, by pumping the suspension from a storage tank into a degasifier with a vacuum chamber in which the suspension is degassed by boiling it at reduced pressure, and then pumping the suspension to a centrifugal separator to remove solids, whilst keeping out air or other gases, and then dewatering the suspension. As shown, the suspension is fed through inlet 2 to vat 1, 'the liquid level 4 being kept constant by weir 3. Suspension is drawn off by pump 6 through line 5, and further fibre may be added at 7. It then passes through line 8 to vacuum degasifier 9, through lines 10 and 16 to pump 11, through line 12 to centrifugal separator 13, and through line 14 to dewatering apparatus 15. White water may be returned through line 17 to the inlet 2. Rejects from the separator 13 pass through line 18 and pump 19 to a second centrifugal separator 20, rejects from which leave the system at 22. Accepts from separator 20 are recycled through line 21 to line 5. The suction sides of the three pumps are connected through lines 23 and 16, so that all are at the same pressure, and are arranged so that liquid flows are in the directions shown. Screens may optionally be inserted at 24. Another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) differs in the following respects: there are two degasifiers (9a and 9b), and additional fibre is supplied to the inlet only of the former the whole output of degasifier (9a), and part of that of 9b proceed to the primary centrifugal separator, part of the rest of the output from 9b being returned to the vat (1a), part through a line (26a) and combined with the output from the primary centrifugal separator and pumped to the dewatering apparatus (15a) and part through a line (23a) to a pump (19a) which combines it with the rejects from the primary centrifugal separator and feeds them to the secondary centrifugal separator and accepts from the secondary centrifugal separator and sent directly to the pump 11a feeding the primary separator.
