Abstract

Calcium aluminate and calcium silicate raw cement mixes are preheated to remove surface water and water of crystallization and to partially decarbonate the mixes, the mixes are then fed in the form of granules into a heating chamber to rapidly heat them to a temperature, below the melting point of the mixes but not more than 500 F. below the melting point in the case of calcium silicate raw and not more than 150 F below in the case of calcium aluminate raw mixes, and maintained at this temperature for at least two minutes. The raw mixes can contain calcium sulphate and are preheated and sintered as powders or as pellets, the sintering can be carried out in a rotary kiln, a shaft kiln, an agitated flowing bed or on a travel ling hearth at about 2500-2600 F. for calcium aluminate mixes and at about 2700 F. for Portland cement mixes.
