Abstract
A ferrous surface is chromated by first subjecting to an acid pre-treatment, and then contacting with an aqueous solution (pH 1 to 2À5) containing (% by weight) at least 0À05 hexavalent chromium, 0À01 to 0À5 fluoride ions, and 0À001 to 0À5 complex cyanide, the pH being maintained by adding fluoboric acid. By omitting the acid pre-treatment step and the addition of fluoboric acid, the solution may be used to coat aluminium and zinc surfaces. The acid pre-treatment may be with phosphoric, hydrofluoric, sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric or fluoboric acids. The acid pre-treatment may be combined with a preliminary cleaning step by using a solution of a phosphate and a wetting agent. The cyanide may be ferricyanic or ferrocyanic acids or water soluble salts thereof. The coating may be given a hexavalent chromium rinse.
