Abstract

Hollow articles are made from fabric material by peripherally clamping the material at a plurality of spaced points and drawing it using a male plunger. The material may be drawn at room temperature and subsequently heat set if necessary, may include thermoplastic fibres in which case it is heated and cooled subsequent to drawing, or may include a resin impregnant, e.g. an isocyanate-polyester reaction product in which case it is heated after drawing. Textile materials suitable for use are closely woven fabrics of polyacrylonitrile fibres mixed with polyester or polyamide fibres. In one example, a hat crown is drawn at 200 C. from a laminate comprising a fabric of 50% polyacrylonitrile fibres and 50% polyester fibres, and a lining fabric of 80% acrylic fibres and 20% polyamide fibres bonded together by a fleece of low melting point polyamide fibres. In a second example the fabric consists of two layers each consisting of 85% polyacrylonitrile fibres and 15% of polyamide fibres.
