Abstract
A method of enhancing the easy machining benefit of an addition of sulfur to an austenitic stainless steel consisting essentially of, in percent by weight: carbon up to 0.50%, sulfur from about 0.25 to about 0.45%; manganese from above 2.0 to about 7.0%; chrome from about 16 to about 30%; Nickel from about 5 to about 26%; silicon up to about 3%; molybdenum to about 4%; zirconium up to about 1%; copper up to about 4%; selenium, tellurium and lead up to approximately 0.50% of each; columbium, tantalum, titanium up to approximately 2.0% in total; nitrogen to about 0.35%; phosphorus up to about 0.50%; iron the rest, except incidental impurities; and in which the sulfur and manganese contents are selected, within the respective margins of each, so that they fall below the curve M of Figure 7, which method comprises incorporating manganese into the steel in an amount of at least about 8. times the sulfur content, and limit the amounts and proportions of sulfur and manganese to those in which substantially all of the sulfur is present in the form of sulfide particles of substantially uniform size and distribution after hot working of the steel.
