Abstract
An elongate cylindrical fuel element comprises inner and outer tubes 1, 2 defining an annular space containing a tube or stack of rings 3 of fissile material the inner tube includes corrugations 9 through which the inner tube is supported by the corrugations contacting a rigid graphite cylindrical member 12. Coolant flows both through the passage between 1 and 12, and along the exterior of the outer tube 2 small corrugations 20 are provided. The large longitudinal corrugations 9 house stiffeners 13 since the casing is preferably very thin stainless steel, e.g. 0À05 mm. thick. The longitudinal and transverse corrugations 10, 11 provide for radial and axial flexibility the spaces between the fuel column and the canning material are filled with a metal which is plastic at the operating temperature, e.g. magnesium. The can ends are closed by annular rings 5 which carry wires 15 to rigidly secure the cylinder 12 to the canning these wires can be replaced (Fig. 3, not shown) by a spider.
