Abstract
Ferrous articles are simultaneously degreased and coated with an amorphous oxalate layer by treating with an oxalate solution containing an acid stable water emulsion of one or more hydrocarbon solvents for grease, such as kerosene. The oxalate coating solution contains oxalic acid, sodium tripolyphosphate, ferrous sulphate, sodium nitrite and 15 g/l. of a water emulsion of kerosene. The coated material is rinsed in water and may then be rinsed in an aqueous solution of chromic acid followed by a water rinse prior to painting.
