Abstract
Concentration of microalgae cultures by a process of osmotic elimination of the medium using glycerol solutions. The present invention consists of concentrating microalgae cultures by means of an economical process and of low energetic consumption being able to reuse the residual glycerol of the synthesis of biodiesel. The glycerol solution constitutes the osmotic solution, which is brought into contact with the microalgae culture through a semipermeable membrane. The difference of osmotic pressure between the culture and the glycerol solution causes the water to be transferred to the glycerol, thus achieving, without adding chemicals or additional energy expenditure, the concentration of the culture. This procedure allows smaller volumes to be handled in subsequent microalgae cultivation processes, with the subsequent cut in the cost of equipment, supplies and energy.
