Abstract

Reactor with porous ceramic wall and method for obtaining ethane, ethylene and other hydrocarbons from methane. A feed containing methane passes through a catalyst bed wholly or partly placed to one side of a porous medium through which a gas containing oxygen permeates. Ethane, ethylene and other hydrocarbons are obtained, together with oxides of carbon and hydrogen. The hydrocarbon selectivity which can be achieved for a given level of methane conversion is greater than in a fixed bed reactor in which the reagents are fed simultaneously to the reactor inlet.
