Definitions
- the present invention relates to a lighting kit configured to be attached to a support surface or support structure, wherein the kit comprises, on the one hand, a light source, preferably in the form of a printed circuit board with light-emitting diodes, and, on the other hand, at least a first and second elongate extruded support profile made of silicone rubber, wherein the lighting kit furthermore comprises coupling means which are configured to connect juxtaposed support profiles to each other, and wherein a connecting seam is formed between adjoining support profiles in the connected position.
- the lighting kit is preferably configured to be attached to flat and/or curved support surfaces, flat and/or curved support structures, or flat and/or curved supporting walls. More specifically, the kit is suitable for outdoor use. Thus, the lighting kit is in particular configured to be attached to the external walls of buildings having rounded or curved surfaces.
- LED fittings which are sufficiently watertight (typically IP class > 65), UV-resistant and temperature-resistant.
- the LED fittings are directly or indirectly fitted, by means of a separate mounting profile, to the outer side of the surface to be lit using a known fastening means, such as screws or glue.
- a known fastening means such as screws or glue.
- Such an LED fitting is generally known, and usually comprises an elongate extruded steel or aluminium profile (standard 6 metres in length), a printed circuit board with light-emitting diodes (the so-called LED lighting strip) which is fixed in the profile by means of glue or clips, and a semi-transparent cover in order to diffuse the light.
- the various fittings are connected to each other by means of connectors suitable for the purpose.
- the known fittings have the drawback that they are less suitable for lighting curved or bent surfaces.
- a lighting system composed of the known interconnected fittings will not form a continuous visual unit, due to the fact that the zone (seam) where the mutual connection is produced will not light up, as the welding wires and/or the so-called cable bushing elements, also referred to as connectors, are situated there which provide the power and control for the diodes fitted on the printed circuit board, by means of the cabling provided therein.
- said zone may have a width of a few centimetres.
- the Chinese patent publication CN 213 299 691 U describes a single-piece flexible lighting strip comprising a printed circuit board with light-emitting diodes which is enclosed by a housing of silicone rubber, wherein the cross-sectional shape of the connector corresponds with the enclosing housing.
- a lighting strip which is designed in this way is not suitable to form part of a lighting system composed of interconnected strips.
- the connectors which are present if the strips are nevertheless coupled to each other will form an obstacle for the emitted light at the location of the zone where the strips are coupled to each other, resulting in a discontinuity of the light emission.
- the German patent publication DE 10 2016 003 733 A1 describes a lighting module for lighting an interior of a vehicle, comprising a flexible base body, a flexible printed circuit board secured to the base body and having at least one light source.
- Various lighting modules can be connected to one another mechanically and/or electrically by means of connecting elements.
- An advantage of the described lighting module is the fact that the zone at the location of the mutual connection between two lighting modules will not light up, thus likewise resulting in a discontinuity of the light emission.
- European patent publication EP 3 594 558 A1 describes a method for installing a lighting appliance, wherein the appliance comprises an elongate body with a first light-emitting surface and at least one second surface with an encapsulating layer on the underside of the at least one second surface and a distribution of electrically driven light-radiation sources arranged in the elongate body along the length thereof in order to project light radiation to the light-emitting surface, wherein the method consists of providing electrically conductive formations configured to transmit electrical signals relative to the electrically driven light-radiation sources, and providing at least one passage for the electrically conductive formations through the encapsulating layer on the at least one second surface, wherein at least some of the electrically conductive formations pass through the at least one passage.
- the object of the invention is achieved by providing a lighting kit configured to be attached to a support surface, as described in the first claim.
- a lighting kit configured to be attached to a support surface, as described in the first claim.
- an extruded support profile made of an elastic plastic material in particular silicone rubber
- silicone rubber has the advantage that it is elastic and weatherproof (watertight and UV-resistant).
- silicone having a Shore hardness of 80A is used.
- the elastic material from which the support profile is made the printed circuit board is enclosed by a housing made of silicone rubber which is easily fittable in the receiving cavity.
- one part of the housing which encloses the printed circuit board extends into the receiving cavity of a first support profile, and the other part of the housing in question extends into the receiving cavity of a second support profile situated adjacent thereto.
- the fitted connectors (cable bushing elements) which provide power to the printed circuit board will not extend under the connecting seam, as a result of which there will then not be any discontinuity in the light emission at the location of the connecting seam.
- a lighting kit configured in this way consequently offers the advantage that it will provide a uniform and preferably diffuse light emission along the entire length of the lighting kit, which is determined by the total length of the interconnected support profiles, thus preventing the occurrence of dark areas or zones. The reason for this is that the light emanating from the diodes will diffuse in such a way that the connecting seam is no longer visible.
- the connecting seam formed between adjoining support profiles preferably has a width of at most 1 mm.
- a printed circuit board with emitting diodes is chosen.
- a flexible printed circuit board is known by the term LED strips, such LED strips are produced on rolls (printed circuit tracks) of 1 metre, 5 metres or more. Every LED strip is provided with additional current-carrying electrical connection cables.
- LED strips are available in warm white, natural white or white.
- the printed circuit board is provided with RGB-LEDs or RGB with white or amber colour.
- LED strips are dimmable and/or controllable by means of an external dimmer or control unit directly connected to the LED strips, although an LED strip dimmer/control unit would then be required. It is also possible to install an integrated RGB or RGBW pixel control decoding integrated circuit (IC) in order to render the entire LED strip addressable, be it by means of DMX or by means of more advanced protocols (Artnet or SPI, etc.).
- IC integrated RGB or RGBW pixel control decoding integrated circuit
- the elongate support profile is made as a single part, and the support profile comprises two side walls and an upper wall extending between the side walls, wherein the side walls are configured to block the light originating from the light-emitting diodes, and wherein the upper wall is configured to diffuse the light originating from the light-emitting diodes.
- the upper wall is preferably made of a semi-transparent silicone rubber.
- the side walls are made of opaque silicone rubber. The various silicone rubbers, being the semi-transparent silicone rubber for the upper wall and the opaque silicone rubber for the side walls, are brought to the desired position in the mould together, during the production of the support profile.
- the elongate support profile furthermore comprises a base wall extending between the side walls and extending at a distance under the upper wall, so that an intermediate cavity is formed between the base wall and upper wall which extends in the longitudinal direction of the profile.
- the base wall is also configured to diffuse the light originating from the light-emitting diodes.
- the base wall is preferably made of the same material as the upper wall.
- the coupling means are designed as a connecting piece which is configured to connect adjacent support profiles, wherein the intermediate cavity at the end of one profile is configured to accommodate a part of the connecting piece in a slidingly fitted manner, and the intermediate cavity at the end of an adjacent profile is configured to accommodate another part of the connecting piece in a slidingly fitted manner. Due to the fact that the connecting piece extends into both support profiles, these support profiles are mechanically connected to each other.
- the connecting piece will only connect the support profiles to each other, not the separate housings which enclose the printed circuit board.
- the connecting piece preferably has a shape similar to the shape of the intermediate cavity.
- the connecting piece is preferably made of a silicone rubber, preferably a transparent silicone rubber. The use of a transparent material for the connecting piece offers the advantage that it will also allow the light originating from the light source to pass through, which contributes to visual unity.
- the connecting piece is made of a silicone rubber having a higher hardness than the silicone rubber which is used in the production of the support profile.
- Said printed circuit board is enclosed by a housing made of silicone rubber, the housing, in a preferred embodiment, furthermore comprising one or more passage ducts in which an electrical current-carrying wire extends.
- the enclosing housing is preferably provided by means of extrusion. During extrusion, the desired electrical current-carrying wires are co-extruded.
- a passage duct comprising an electrical current-carrying wire is provided on both sides of the housing.
- Said conductive wire is preferably of the type 10 - 15 AWG. The presence of this wire in the one or more passage ducts makes it possible to easily span distances of 10+ metres without loss of lighting quality, intensity or voltage. The presence of said one or more passage ducts is not obligatory.
- the receiving cavity of the support profile is of a design suitable for accommodating the light source, preferably the housing with the printed circuit board.
- a cable bushing element is provided on the longitudinal ends of said housing, wherein each cable bushing element is preferably provided with one or more passage openings for a data and/or power supply cable.
- the cable bushing elements are preferably single-piece profiles made of plastic which are, more particularly, produced by means of injection-moulding.
- the injections mouldings forming the cable bushing elements are preferably integrally (non-releasably) connected to the ends of the housing. The connection to the ends will preferably be effected by means of heat. Integrally connecting the cable bushing elements to the housing enclosing the printed circuit board will contribute to the watertightness of the support profile with the printed circuit board.
- the cable bushing elements are fitted, viewed in the longitudinal direction, in an offset manner with respect to the coupling means.
- this offers the considerable advantage that only a narrow connecting seam (joint) is visible between adjacent support profiles on the visible side of the lighting kit.
- the joint is formed at the location of the connecting piece where the lateral ends of juxtaposed support profiles adjoin each other at the location of a connecting surface. It is at the location of this connecting surface that a seam will be formed.
- the lighting kit will, in use, in particular when the diodes are lit, in particular the various support profiles with the light sources accommodated therein, form a continuous visual unit. It is possible to produce the lighting kit with a joint of limited width between the adjoining support profiles, due to the fact that the cable bushing elements, which are necessary in order to control and supply the light source with power, are situated on the rear side (the side opposite the visible side) of the support profile, and due to the fact that the housing with the printed circuit board extends in a different support profile, these cable bushing elements are fitted offset with respect to the coupling means, i.e. the connecting piece, which connect the mutual support profiles to each other.
- the lighting kit offers the advantage that when various support profiles are fitted to each other, the various printed circuit boards are placed in the receiving cavities of juxtaposed support profiles in such a way that the visible joint, situated on the front side (visible side) of the support profile, of juxtaposed support profiles, viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support profile, is offset with respect to the cable bushing elements which are situated on the rear side of the support profile which is situated opposite the visible side.
- the interconnected support profiles will visually form a unit, due to the fact that hardly any visual interruption will be visible, whereas with the prior-art profiles the respective cable bushing elements did clearly show such an interruption.
- the cable bushing elements are 2 mm wide, so that the zone at the location where two printed circuit boards adjoin one another is approximately 4 mm wide (2 mm for each cable bushing element).
- the elongate support profile comprises two mutually facing supporting legs, wherein one supporting leg extends transversely to the end of one side wall, and the other supporting leg extends transversely to the end of the other side wall, and wherein said receiving cavity extends between the base wall and said supporting legs.
- the profile is made of an elastic material, i.e. silicone rubber, the supporting legs are easily foldable, as a result of which the printed circuit board can easily be introduced in the receiving cavity. After placing the printed circuit board, the supporting legs spring back to their original position, thus preventing the printed circuit board from coming away from the support profile.
- the lighting kit comprises a mounting profile for mounting on a support surface and configured to accommodate the elongate support profile in a clamping manner.
- the mounting profile is preferably of a U-shaped design. In use, the mounting profile will be attached at regular intervals to the support surface attached by means of a known fastening means, such as for example screws or glue. Thereafter, the support profile may be placed therein.
- the mounting profile is preferably an extruded profile, preferably made of aluminium.
- the mounting profile comprises a base surface with two upright walls.
- the inner sides of the upright walls are provided with projections which fit in corresponding grooves which are provided in the outer surface of the upright side walls of the support profile.
- the lighting kit (1) according to the present invention and as illustrated, inter alia, in Fig. 9 was developed for outdoor use, in which the lighting kit (1) is arranged on the support surfaces (5) of buildings having a specific curved design, a large number of corners or curvatures.
- the respective lighting kit (1), as illustrated in Fig. 10 may also be fitted to flat support surfaces (5) of a building or space.
- the lighting kit (1) comprises, on the one hand, a light source, preferably in the form of a printed circuit board (2) provided with light-emitting diodes (a so-called LED strip), and, on the other hand, an elongate support profile (3) having a receiving cavity (4) formed in the elongate support profile (3) and extending in the longitudinal direction of the support profile (3), and having a design which is suitable for accommodating said light source.
- said support profile (3) is an extruded profile made of an elastic plastic material, preferably silicone rubber.
- a support profile (3) formed in this way is, on the one hand, sufficiently watertight and UV-resistant, but can also easily be mounted on both flat or curved support surfaces due to its elasticity.
- the support profile (3) is a single-part profile which comprises two side walls (6), and an upper wall (7) extending between the side walls (6) and a base wall (8).
- the base wall (8) extends at a distance under the upper wall, so that there is an intermediate cavity (9) between the base wall and upper wall which extends in the longitudinal direction of the profile.
- a coupling means in the form of a connecting piece (10) may be arranged in the formed intermediate cavity (9) in order thus to connect different support profiles (3) to each other.
- the connecting piece (10) is shown in Fig. 5 , the connecting piece (10) preferably has a shape corresponding to the shape of the intermediate cavity (9) and is preferably made of a transparent silicone rubber having a higher hardness than the silicone rubber which is used to produce the support profile (3).
- a plastic material preferably silicone rubber
- silicone rubber By using two different silicone rubbers, one semi-transparent and the other opaque, and introducing both simultaneously in the die, a support profile (3) is obtained whose side walls (6) are configured to block the light originating from the light-emitting diodes and whose upper wall (7) and base wall (8) are configured to diffuse the light originating from the light-emitting diodes.
- the opaque side walls (6) prevent the (scattered) light from spreading laterally.
- the latter is enclosed with a plastic material, preferably silicone rubber. This is performed by means of an extrusion process. In this way, a housing (12) in which a printed circuit board (2) is accommodated is produced. During the extrusion, the desired current-carrying wires (24) are co-extruded at the same time. These wires (24) are provided in a passage duct (13). In the illustrated housing (12), a passage duct (13) is provided to the left and to the right of the printed circuit board (2) in the housing (12).
- the conductive wire (24) used is preferably of the type 10 - 15 AWG. The use of this wire makes it easily possible to span distances of 10 metres and more without loss of lighting quality, intensity and voltage.
- This housing is placed in the receiving cavity (4) of the support profile (3). Often, the housing (12) is installed on site. The respective housing (12) is often longer than the support profile (3). According to the present invention, and as illustrated, inter alia, in Figs. 11.1 and 11.2 , a part of the housing (12) is provided in one (first) support profile (3), while the remaining part of the housing (12) is provided in the next (adjoining) (second) support profile (3).
- the elongate support profile (3) comprises, as can be seen, inter alia, in Fig. 3 , two mutually facing supporting legs (16; 17), with one supporting leg (16) extending transversely to the end of one side wall (6), and the other supporting leg (17) extending transversely to the end of the other side wall (6).
- said receiving cavity extends between the base wall (8) and said supporting legs (16; 17). Since the profile is made of an elastic material, i.e. silicone, the supporting legs are easily foldable, as a result of which the housing (12) with the enclosed printed circuit board (2) can easily be introduced in the receiving cavity (4). After the housing (12) has been placed, the supporting legs (16; 17) spring back to their original position and thus prevent the housing from becoming detached from the profile.
- Said housing (12) is preferably accommodated in the receiving cavities of the support profiles (3) in a clamping manner.
- a so-called cable bushing element (11) is fitted to the two ends of the housing (12).
- the cable bushing elements (11) are preferably injection mouldings made of plastic which are non-releasably connected to the housing (12) by means of heat.
- the standard width of these cable bushing elements (11) is approximately 2 mm.
- Every cable bushing element (11) is provided with two passage openings, with one passage opening being configured for passing through a data cable (14), and the other passage opening being configured for passing through a power supply cable (15).
- the juxtaposed printed circuit boards are electrically connected to each other. This connection will be brought about at the point in time when the support profiles (3) are being installed. After the juxtaposed printed circuit boards have been electrically connected to each other, the cable bushing element (11) provided on one housing is situated against, or virtually against, the cable bushing element (11) which is provided on the next housing.
- the lighting kit (1) For installation of the support profile (3), the lighting kit (1) comprises a number of mounting profiles (18), preferably made of aluminium, which are fitted on the support surface at regular intervals by means of suitable fastening means. Thereafter, the support profile (3) in which the printed circuit board has already been fitted can be placed in the mounting profile.
- the dimensions and/or design of the mounting profile (18) are chosen such that the support profile is clamped in the mounting profile.
- the mounting profile (18) comprises a base surface (20) with two upright walls (21).
- the inside of the upright walls (21) is provided with projections (22) which fit in corresponding grooves (23) which are provided in the outer face of the upright side walls (6) of the support profile (3).
- the lighting kit (1) according to the invention has the additional advantage that the joint between support profiles (3) which are subsequently fitted against each other on a support surface is hardly visible. This is achieved by the fact that the housing with the printed circuit board and the support profile will be produced as separate components, making it possible to provide the necessary cable bushing elements (11), which are required to provide power for and control the diodes, on the rear side of the support profile (3) and to install them in an offset manner with respect to the coupling elements which are required in order to couple the adjoining support profiles to each other.
- the lighting kit according to the invention meets all requirements with regard to watertightness, preferably IP class 67, and UV-resistance.
- the lighting kit (1) also comprises an end piece (see Fig. 6 ) which can be fitted in the support profile (at the end thereof).

Description
- In practice, the exteriors of buildings and other large surfaces are lit using LED fittings which are sufficiently watertight (typically IP class > 65), UV-resistant and temperature-resistant. In this case, the LED fittings are directly or indirectly fitted, by means of a separate mounting profile, to the outer side of the surface to be lit using a known fastening means, such as screws or glue. Such an LED fitting is generally known, and usually comprises an elongate extruded steel or aluminium profile (standard 6 metres in length), a printed circuit board with light-emitting diodes (the so-called LED lighting strip) which is fixed in the profile by means of glue or clips, and a semi-transparent cover in order to diffuse the light. In order to span great lengths, in particular of more than 5 to 6 metres, the various fittings are connected to each other by means of connectors suitable for the purpose.
- However, due to their length and planar shape, the known fittings have the drawback that they are less suitable for lighting curved or bent surfaces. In addition, a lighting system composed of the known interconnected fittings will not form a continuous visual unit, due to the fact that the zone (seam) where the mutual connection is produced will not light up, as the welding wires and/or the so-called cable bushing elements, also referred to as connectors, are situated there which provide the power and control for the diodes fitted on the printed circuit board, by means of the cabling provided therein. In practice, said zone may have a width of a few centimetres.
- The Chinese patent publication
CN 213 299 691 U describes a single-piece flexible lighting strip comprising a printed circuit board with light-emitting diodes which is enclosed by a housing of silicone rubber, wherein the cross-sectional shape of the connector corresponds with the enclosing housing. A lighting strip which is designed in this way is not suitable to form part of a lighting system composed of interconnected strips. In addition, the connectors which are present if the strips are nevertheless coupled to each other will form an obstacle for the emitted light at the location of the zone where the strips are coupled to each other, resulting in a discontinuity of the light emission. - The German
patent publication DE 10 2016 003 733 A1 describes a lighting module for lighting an interior of a vehicle, comprising a flexible base body, a flexible printed circuit board secured to the base body and having at least one light source. Various lighting modules can be connected to one another mechanically and/or electrically by means of connecting elements. An advantage of the described lighting module is the fact that the zone at the location of the mutual connection between two lighting modules will not light up, thus likewise resulting in a discontinuity of the light emission. - One possible solution to prevent discontinuity of the light emission at the location of the connectors is described in European
patent publication EP 3 594 558 A1 . This publication describes a method for installing a lighting appliance, wherein the appliance comprises an elongate body with a first light-emitting surface and at least one second surface with an encapsulating layer on the underside of the at least one second surface and a distribution of electrically driven light-radiation sources arranged in the elongate body along the length thereof in order to project light radiation to the light-emitting surface, wherein the method consists of providing electrically conductive formations configured to transmit electrical signals relative to the electrically driven light-radiation sources, and providing at least one passage for the electrically conductive formations through the encapsulating layer on the at least one second surface, wherein at least some of the electrically conductive formations pass through the at least one passage. By means of the respective method, it is possible to place two or more appliances configured in this way next to each other without producing dark areas or shadows between the respective light radiation-emitting surfaces, since the cables or wires at the ends of the light-radiation sources can extend through passages which are formed on the surface of the device opposite the emission radiation surface, wherein the cables or wires pass through the encapsulating layer. However, this solution has the drawback that the entire appliance has to be replaced in case of damage to the appliance, which is often a cumbersome process. - It is an object of the present invention to provide a solution for said problems and to provide a lighting kit which can be fitted easily and simply on both planar and curved support surfaces, and which preferably has a minimal seam between juxtaposedly connected support profiles, wherein the occurrence of a discontinuity of the light emission at the location of the connectors is prevented, and which can easily be repaired or replaced in case of damage or breakage. More particularly, it is an object of the invention for the connecting seam between two adjoining support profiles to no longer be visually noticeable to, for example, a passer-by during use, when he/she looks at the lighting kit from a certain distance.
- The object of the invention is achieved by providing a lighting kit configured to be attached to a support surface, as described in the first claim. By using an extruded support profile made of an elastic plastic material, in particular silicone rubber, it becomes possible to easily and simply fit the various support profiles in which a printed circuit board enclosed by a housing made of silicone rubber is accommodated, on a curved support surface. Silicone has the advantage that it is elastic and weatherproof (watertight and UV-resistant). Preferably, silicone having a Shore hardness of 80A is used. As a result of the elastic material from which the support profile is made, the printed circuit board is enclosed by a housing made of silicone rubber which is easily fittable in the receiving cavity.
- With the lighting kit corresponding to the invention, one part of the housing which encloses the printed circuit board extends into the receiving cavity of a first support profile, and the other part of the housing in question extends into the receiving cavity of a second support profile situated adjacent thereto. As a result of this arrangement, the fitted connectors (cable bushing elements) which provide power to the printed circuit board will not extend under the connecting seam, as a result of which there will then not be any discontinuity in the light emission at the location of the connecting seam. A lighting kit configured in this way consequently offers the advantage that it will provide a uniform and preferably diffuse light emission along the entire length of the lighting kit, which is determined by the total length of the interconnected support profiles, thus preventing the occurrence of dark areas or zones. The reason for this is that the light emanating from the diodes will diffuse in such a way that the connecting seam is no longer visible. The connecting seam formed between adjoining support profiles preferably has a width of at most 1 mm.
- In addition, by using two separate components, on the one hand the support profile and on the other hand the housing with the printed circuit board, it will be relatively easy to replace damaged components in a simple manner.
- As light source for the lighting kit according to the invention, a printed circuit board with emitting diodes is chosen. Such a flexible printed circuit board is known by the term LED strips, such LED strips are produced on rolls (printed circuit tracks) of 1 metre, 5 metres or more. Every LED strip is provided with additional current-carrying electrical connection cables. As standard, LED strips are available in warm white, natural white or white. In order to generate several colours, the printed circuit board is provided with RGB-LEDs or RGB with white or amber colour.
- In a preferred embodiment of the lighting kit according to the invention, the elongate support profile is made as a single part, and the support profile comprises two side walls and an upper wall extending between the side walls, wherein the side walls are configured to block the light originating from the light-emitting diodes, and wherein the upper wall is configured to diffuse the light originating from the light-emitting diodes. In order to diffuse the light, the upper wall is preferably made of a semi-transparent silicone rubber. In order to prevent lateral diffusion of the (scattered) light, the side walls are made of opaque silicone rubber. The various silicone rubbers, being the semi-transparent silicone rubber for the upper wall and the opaque silicone rubber for the side walls, are brought to the desired position in the mould together, during the production of the support profile.
- According to a more preferred embodiment of the lighting kit according to the invention, the elongate support profile furthermore comprises a base wall extending between the side walls and extending at a distance under the upper wall, so that an intermediate cavity is formed between the base wall and upper wall which extends in the longitudinal direction of the profile. Obviously, the base wall is also configured to diffuse the light originating from the light-emitting diodes. To this end, the base wall is preferably made of the same material as the upper wall.
- In order to connect juxtaposed support profiles to each other, such as for example a first and second support profile, the coupling means are designed as a connecting piece which is configured to connect adjacent support profiles, wherein the intermediate cavity at the end of one profile is configured to accommodate a part of the connecting piece in a slidingly fitted manner, and the intermediate cavity at the end of an adjacent profile is configured to accommodate another part of the connecting piece in a slidingly fitted manner. Due to the fact that the connecting piece extends into both support profiles, these support profiles are mechanically connected to each other. The connecting piece will only connect the support profiles to each other, not the separate housings which enclose the printed circuit board. The connecting piece preferably has a shape similar to the shape of the intermediate cavity. The connecting piece is preferably made of a silicone rubber, preferably a transparent silicone rubber. The use of a transparent material for the connecting piece offers the advantage that it will also allow the light originating from the light source to pass through, which contributes to visual unity.
- More particularly, the connecting piece is made of a silicone rubber having a higher hardness than the silicone rubber which is used in the production of the support profile. By using such a connecting piece, juxtaposed support profiles can be securely connected to each other. In addition, the connecting piece provides improved watertightness and dustproofness.
- Said printed circuit board is enclosed by a housing made of silicone rubber, the housing, in a preferred embodiment, furthermore comprising one or more passage ducts in which an electrical current-carrying wire extends. The enclosing housing is preferably provided by means of extrusion. During extrusion, the desired electrical current-carrying wires are co-extruded. Preferably, a passage duct comprising an electrical current-carrying wire is provided on both sides of the housing. Said conductive wire is preferably of the type 10 - 15 AWG. The presence of this wire in the one or more passage ducts makes it possible to easily span distances of 10+ metres without loss of lighting quality, intensity or voltage. The presence of said one or more passage ducts is not obligatory. In particular, the receiving cavity of the support profile is of a design suitable for accommodating the light source, preferably the housing with the printed circuit board.
- A cable bushing element is provided on the longitudinal ends of said housing, wherein each cable bushing element is preferably provided with one or more passage openings for a data and/or power supply cable. The cable bushing elements are preferably single-piece profiles made of plastic which are, more particularly, produced by means of injection-moulding. The injections mouldings forming the cable bushing elements are preferably integrally (non-releasably) connected to the ends of the housing. The connection to the ends will preferably be effected by means of heat. Integrally connecting the cable bushing elements to the housing enclosing the printed circuit board will contribute to the watertightness of the support profile with the printed circuit board.
- According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the lighting kit according to the invention, the cable bushing elements are fitted, viewed in the longitudinal direction, in an offset manner with respect to the coupling means. As mentioned above, this offers the considerable advantage that only a narrow connecting seam (joint) is visible between adjacent support profiles on the visible side of the lighting kit. The joint (seam) is formed at the location of the connecting piece where the lateral ends of juxtaposed support profiles adjoin each other at the location of a connecting surface. It is at the location of this connecting surface that a seam will be formed. Due to the limited width of the seam, approximately 1 mm, and due to the fact that the connecting piece is made of a transparent plastic material, the lighting kit will, in use, in particular when the diodes are lit, in particular the various support profiles with the light sources accommodated therein, form a continuous visual unit.
- Due to the fact that the light source, in particular the printed circuit board with the light-emitting diodes, is only placed in the support profile later on, preferably on site, at the moment when the lighting kit is to be fitted against the desired support surface, the lighting kit offers the advantage that when various support profiles are fitted to each other, the various printed circuit boards are placed in the receiving cavities of juxtaposed support profiles in such a way that the visible joint, situated on the front side (visible side) of the support profile, of juxtaposed support profiles, viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support profile, is offset with respect to the cable bushing elements which are situated on the rear side of the support profile which is situated opposite the visible side. As a result thereof, the interconnected support profiles will visually form a unit, due to the fact that hardly any visual interruption will be visible, whereas with the prior-art profiles the respective cable bushing elements did clearly show such an interruption. In practice, the cable bushing elements are 2 mm wide, so that the zone at the location where two printed circuit boards adjoin one another is approximately 4 mm wide (2 mm for each cable bushing element).
- In a more preferred embodiment of the lighting kit, the elongate support profile comprises two mutually facing supporting legs, wherein one supporting leg extends transversely to the end of one side wall, and the other supporting leg extends transversely to the end of the other side wall, and wherein said receiving cavity extends between the base wall and said supporting legs. As the profile is made of an elastic material, i.e. silicone rubber, the supporting legs are easily foldable, as a result of which the printed circuit board can easily be introduced in the receiving cavity. After placing the printed circuit board, the supporting legs spring back to their original position, thus preventing the printed circuit board from coming away from the support profile.
- In an advantageous embodiment of the lighting kit according to the invention, the lighting kit comprises a mounting profile for mounting on a support surface and configured to accommodate the elongate support profile in a clamping manner. The mounting profile is preferably of a U-shaped design. In use, the mounting profile will be attached at regular intervals to the support surface attached by means of a known fastening means, such as for example screws or glue. Thereafter, the support profile may be placed therein. The mounting profile is preferably an extruded profile, preferably made of aluminium.
- The mounting profile comprises a base surface with two upright walls. To ensure secure anchoring of the support profile in the mounting profile, the inner sides of the upright walls are provided with projections which fit in corresponding grooves which are provided in the outer surface of the upright side walls of the support profile.
- The present invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of a lighting kit according to the present invention. The sole aim of this description is to give illustrative examples and to indicate further advantages and particulars, and can therefore by no means be interpreted as a limitation of the area of application of the invention or of the patent rights defined in the claims.

Fig. 11 : shows a plan view of two support profiles wherein one part of a printed circuit board enclosed by a housing extends into the receiving cavity of a first support profile, and the other part of the housing (12) extends into the receiving cavity of an adjacent second support profile, whereinFig. 11 .1 shows the unconnected position andFig. 11 .2 shows the connected position. - The lighting kit (1) according to the present invention and as illustrated, inter alia, in
Fig. 9 was developed for outdoor use, in which the lighting kit (1) is arranged on the support surfaces (5) of buildings having a specific curved design, a large number of corners or curvatures. Obviously, the respective lighting kit (1), as illustrated inFig. 10 , may also be fitted to flat support surfaces (5) of a building or space. According to the present invention, said support profile (3) is an extruded profile made of an elastic plastic material, preferably silicone rubber. A support profile (3) formed in this way is, on the one hand, sufficiently watertight and UV-resistant, but can also easily be mounted on both flat or curved support surfaces due to its elasticity.
- The support profile (3), as shown, inter alia, in
Fig. 3 , is a single-part profile which comprises two side walls (6), and an upper wall (7) extending between the side walls (6) and a base wall (8). The base wall (8) extends at a distance under the upper wall, so that there is an intermediate cavity (9) between the base wall and upper wall which extends in the longitudinal direction of the profile. As is illustrated inFigs. 7 and 8 , a coupling means in the form of a connecting piece (10) may be arranged in the formed intermediate cavity (9) in order thus to connect different support profiles (3) to each other. One possible embodiment of the connecting piece (10) is shown inFig. 5 , the connecting piece (10) preferably has a shape corresponding to the shape of the intermediate cavity (9) and is preferably made of a transparent silicone rubber having a higher hardness than the silicone rubber which is used to produce the support profile (3). - In order to produce the support profile (3), a plastic material, preferably silicone rubber, is pushed through a die. By using two different silicone rubbers, one semi-transparent and the other opaque, and introducing both simultaneously in the die, a support profile (3) is obtained whose side walls (6) are configured to block the light originating from the light-emitting diodes and whose upper wall (7) and base wall (8) are configured to diffuse the light originating from the light-emitting diodes. The opaque side walls (6) prevent the (scattered) light from spreading laterally.
- In order to protect the printed circuit board (2), the latter is enclosed with a plastic material, preferably silicone rubber. The conductive wire (24) used is preferably of the type 10 - 15 AWG.
According to the present invention, and as illustrated, inter alia, in
Figs. 11.1 and 11.2 , a part of the housing (12) is provided in one (first) support profile (3), while the remaining part of the housing (12) is provided in the next (adjoining) (second) support profile (3). - For ease of mounting and in order to prevent said housing (12) from coming away from the receiving cavity (4), the elongate support profile (3) comprises, as can be seen, inter alia, in
Fig. 3 , two mutually facing supporting legs (16; 17), with one supporting leg (16) extending transversely to the end of one side wall (6), and the other supporting leg (17) extending transversely to the end of the other side wall (6). In this case, said receiving cavity extends between the base wall (8) and said supporting legs (16; 17). Said housing (12) is preferably accommodated in the receiving cavities of the support profiles (3) in a clamping manner. - For the power supply and control of the diodes on the printed circuit board (2), a so-called cable bushing element (11) is fitted to the two ends of the housing (12). The cable bushing elements (11) are preferably injection mouldings made of plastic which are non-releasably connected to the housing (12) by means of heat. The standard width of these cable bushing elements (11) is approximately 2 mm. Every cable bushing element (11) is provided with two passage openings, with one passage opening being configured for passing through a data cable (14), and the other passage opening being configured for passing through a power supply cable (15). By means of said cables (14, 15), the juxtaposed printed circuit boards are electrically connected to each other.
- For installation of the support profile (3), the lighting kit (1) comprises a number of mounting profiles (18), preferably made of aluminium, which are fitted on the support surface at regular intervals by means of suitable fastening means. Thereafter, the support profile (3) in which the printed circuit board has already been fitted can be placed in the mounting profile. The dimensions and/or design of the mounting profile (18) are chosen such that the support profile is clamped in the mounting profile. As is clear from, inter alia,
Figs. 2 and3 , the mounting profile (18) comprises a base surface (20) with two upright walls (21). For secure anchoring of the support profile (3) in the mounting profile (18), the inside of the upright walls (21) is provided with projections (22) which fit in corresponding grooves (23) which are provided in the outer face of the upright side walls (6) of the support profile (3). It is possible to install the cable bushing elements offset with respect to the coupling means, due to the fact that the mutual coupling of support profiles, which is effected on the front side of the support profile, does not have to take place at the same level as where the electrical coupling of the printed circuit boards is performed.
- The lighting kit according to the invention meets all requirements with regard to watertightness, preferably IP class 67, and UV-resistance.
- In order to finish off the assembly, the lighting kit (1) according to the invention also comprises an end piece (see
Fig. 6 ) which can be fitted in the support profile (at the end thereof).
