Abstract
The present invention relates to a fog generating marker fluid for a fog generator comprising a fog generating fluid and an invisible marker. Further, the invention relates to a fog generator comprising such fog generating marker fluid, and to its use in security applications and in authentication of genuine objects or products. Additionally, the present invention relates to a method for authenticating a person or an object, comprising: providing a fog generating fluid; mixing an invisible marker with said fog generating fluid, obtaining a fog generating marker fluid; and transforming the fog generating marker fluid into fog in the presence of a person or an object at a given location.
Description
- The present invention relates to a fog generating marker fluid for a fog generator. Further, the invention relates to a fog generator comprising such fog generating marker fluid, and to its use in security applications and in authentication of genuine objects or products. Additionally, the present invention relates to a method for authenticating a person or an object.
- Fog generators are used in a variety of applications. In particular, they are used in security applications for generating a fog screen upon entrance of an unauthorized person at a given location for obscuring goods or valuables from that unauthorized person's sight.
- A main working principle of a fog generator is as follows: a fog generating fluid is driven into a heat exchanger by a pump or a propellant gas; in the heat exchanger, the fog generating fluid is heated and transferred to steam; the steam is ejected then at the end of the heat exchanger in the form of a fog into the ambient.
- The fog generated fluid used in a fog generator for security applications is designed such that the ejected steam and fog is harmless for the goods and valuables present at a given location and for people entering that location after the crime, leaving substantially no traces on the goods and people's bodies or clothes.
- However, a general problem is that also on the unauthorized person's body or clothes or on stolen objects no fog traces can be found. Consequently, in case the person has not been caught in flagrante delicto, it is substantially not possible to prove he/she, or an object in his/her possession was present at the given location.
- Considering the above, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method for authenticating a person or an object present at a given location.
- It is a further object of the present invention to provide a method which is not harmful for goods or persons present at the location, which is in compliance with applicable law, and which allows reliable, stable and persistent detection or authentication.
- The present invention meets the above object by providing a fog generating marker fluid comprising a fog generating fluid and an invisible marker, by providing a fog generator comprising such fog generating marker fluid, and by providing a method comprising mixing an invisible marker with a fog generating fluid, obtaining a fog generating marker fluid and transforming the fog generating marker fluid into fog in the presence of a person of object at a given location.
- The present invention is directed to a fog generating marker fluid for a fog generator comprising a fog generating fluid and an invisible marker. Further, the invention is directed to a fog generator comprising such fog generating marker fluid, and to its use in security applications and in authentication of genuine objects or products. Additionally, the present invention is directed to a method for authenticating a person or an object, comprising: providing a fog generating fluid; mixing an invisible marker with said fog generating fluid, obtaining a fog generating marker fluid; and transforming the fog generating marker fluid into fog in the presence of a person or an object at a given location.
- According to a first embodiment of the present invention, the invention provides a fog generating marker fluid for a fog generator comprising a fog generating fluid and an invisible marker.
- In the context of the present invention, such invisible marker may be any substance suitable for being mixed with the fog generating fluid, for being spread by using the fog as a carrier, for adhering to the surface of objects, bodies, clothes, etc, and having sufficient retention characteristics for being detected by know detection methods or forensic methods.
- The invisible marker maybe produced as solid or liquid, water or oil based, a suspension, an aggregate and the like.
- In an embodiment in accordance with the present invention, the invisible marker may comprise a nucleotide, a nucleotide sequence, a nucleic acid fragment, a nucleic acid, a sequence of nucleic acids, a DNA sequence fragment, a DNA sequence, or derivatives thereof.
- One or more of the nucleotides may be modified enhancing the identification or detection of the nucleotide.
- The sequences or fragments used may vary in length, depending on the application and the detection technique used and may be synthetically produced using a nucleotide/nucleic acid synthesizer or by isolating nucleotide material from yeast, human cell lines, bacteria, animals, plants and the like.
- The concentration of invisible marker in the fog generating marker fluid, and the concentration of nucleotide material or derivatives thereof in the invisible marker may vary depending on the duration the invisible marker needs to be detectable (e.g. 1 month, 1 year, multiple years), the expected environmental exposure, the detection method to be used, etc.
- In another embodiment in accordance with the present invention, the invisible marker may comprise an UV fluorescent substance, e.g. UV ink, such that identification or detection may be possible by means of an UV lamp or other known UV detection techniques. Alternatively, also thermochromic ink may be used.
- In a preferred embodiment, the fog generating marker fluid may comprise a nucleotide, a nucleotide sequence, a nucleic acid fragment, a nucleic acid, a sequence of nucleic acids, a DNA sequence fragment, a DNA sequence, or derivatives thereof, in combination with an UV fluorescent substance, using the latter as a quick and easy detectable substance providing policemen in the field, etc. an quick indication that nucleotides, a nucleic acid sequence, a DNA fragment etc. could be present.
- In accordance with the present invention, the fog generating fluid may comprise at least one glycol or at least one glycerol. Mixtures comprising a glycol and a glycerol, or two or more glycols, or two or more glycerols may be used. To optimize the quality of the fog, the fog generating mixture preferably contains approximately about 5 to 50 volume percent of water, and about 50 to about 80 volume percent of glycol. The glycol may be a mixture of about 10 to 25 volume percent of triethylene glycol, the remainder being dipropylene glycol, but other glycols and glycol mixtures may also be used. An example of a very suitable fog generating fluid comprises about 10 volume percent of water, about 10 volume percent of triethylene glycol, and about 80 volume percent of dipropylene glycol.
- Without being bound by any theory, the fog may have two main functions: (i) obscuring goods and valuables, and (ii) being a carrier for the invisible marker, condensing in the form of (micro)droplets containing invisible marker on the surface of objects, or people's body or clothes. The invisible marker adheres to the surface, while the mixture of water and glycol or glycerol vaporizes. The UV fluorescent substance may function as a general identification means, while the nucleotide or nucleotide sequence etc. may function as a unique identification means.
- Additionally, in an embodiment in accordance with the present invention, a fog generator is provided comprising a fog generating marker fluid as described throughout this text.
- A fog generator in accordance with the present invention may be used in all applications where proof may be requested that objects or persons were present at a given location.
- For example in security applications, such fog generator may be activated upon entrance of an unauthorized person at a given location where the fog generator is installed. The fog generator generates fog carrying the invisible marker which adheres to the unauthorized person's body or clothes such that he/she can still be identified during a period of time after the crime.
- Another example may be its use in anti-counterfeit activities where a genuine object or a collection of genuine objects is exposed to fog carrying the invisible marker, such that these genuine objects or products can be authenticated.
- Additionally, the present invention provides a method for authenticating a person or an object, comprising:
- providing a fog generating fluid
- mixing an invisible marker with said fog generating fluid, obtaining a fog generating marker fluid,
- transforming the fog generating marker fluid into fog in the presence of a person or an object at a given location.
- In an embodiment in accordance with the present invention, a method is provided further comprising subsequently detecting the invisible marker and associating it with the person's or the object's former presence at the given location.
- In a particular embodiment, such person is an unauthorized person at the given location.
- In a particular embodiment, the invisible marker may comprise a unique DNA embedded serial number or a unique encrypted code. As an example, such number or code may be different for each location were a fog generator in accordance with the present invention is installed, or may follow the different serial numbers of a specific series of manufactured products.
- In case it is intended to use the above method for authenticating manufactured products without alter the quality of the products and without major changes to the manufacturing process or logistic chain, it is sufficient to stock the products in a closed location, and activate a sufficiently powerful fog generator comprising a fog generating marker fluid as described above to expose the products to fog comprising invisible marker.
Claims (11)
- A fog generating marker fluid for a fog generator comprising a fog generating fluid and an invisible marker.
- A fog generating marker fluid according to claim 1 wherein the invisible marker comprises a nucleotide, a nucleotide sequence, a nucleic acid fragment, a nucleic acid, a sequence of nucleic acids, a DNA sequence fragment, a DNA sequence, or derivatives thereof.
- A fog generating marker fluid according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the invisible marker comprises an UV fluorescent substance.
- A fog generator comprising a fog generating marker fluid according to any of the above claims.
- Use of a fog generator according to claim 4 for security applications.
- Use of a fog generator according to claim 5 for authenticating genuine objects or products.
- A method for authenticating a person or an object, comprising:- providing a fog generating fluid- mixing an invisible marker with said fog generating fluid, obtaining a fog generating marker fluid,- transforming the fog generating marker fluid into fog in the presence of a person or an object at a given location.
- A method for authenticating a person or an object, wherein the invisible marker comprises a nucleotide, a nucleotide sequence, a nucleic acid fragment, a nucleic acid, a sequence of nucleic acids, a DNA sequence fragment, a DNA sequence, or derivatives thereof.
- A method for authenticating a person or an object according to claims 7 or 8, wherein the invisible marker comprises an UV fluorescent substance.
- A method for authenticating a person or an object according to claims 7 to 9, comprising subsequently detecting the invisible marker and associating it with the person's or the object's former presence at the given location.
- A method for authenticating an person or an object according to claim 10, wherein the person is an unauthorized person at the given location.
