- the amplitude ⁇ 1 of the free bending movement allowed by the articulation device 6, without deformation of the flexible blades 16, 18 is approximately 20 degrees with respect to the initial position represented in FIG. Figure 1. Then, on an extreme flexion amplitude of about 5 additional degrees, the flexible blades 16, 18, by deforming in bending, oppose the continuation of the bending movement and thus dampen a possible shock on the means bending stop 32.
- the amplitude ⁇ 2 of the free extension movement authorized by the articulation device 6 is approximately 25 degrees with respect to the initial position represented in FIG. Extreme extension of about 5 additional degrees, the flexible blades 16, 18, deforming in bending, oppose the continuation of the extension movement and thus dampen any impact on the stop means 34.
- the extent of normal rotation allowing the user to move his ankle effortlessly in the transverse direction 12 is therefore substantially 45 degrees. It is advantageously between 30 and 50 degrees, while the extreme range of rotation between the abutment against the bending stop means 32 and the abutment against the extension stop means 34 is substantially centered on the normal rotation and advantageously between 50 degrees and 70 degrees.
- the flexible blades 16, 18 advantageously act on a range of rotation of between 5 degrees and 20 degrees, both during the bending movement and during the extension movement of the ankle.
- the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 allows a rotation of the rod 4 relative to the body 2 in the direction of elongation 8, to allow pronation / supination of the ankle.
- the passages formed in the body 2 and traversed by the pivots have an oblong shape extending in the direction of elevation. 10. Slight translational movements in the elevation direction between the shaft 4 and the body 2 are also possible to follow the movement of the malleolus of the user.
- the amplitude of each of the free pronation and supination movements is about 10 degrees (ie a pronation / supination free amplitude of about 20 degrees) and it is still advantageously possible to rotate in the direction of elongation of about 5 degrees before reaching abutment along this direction of articulation.
- FIG. 6 illustrates a boot 1 'differing essentially from the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 4 in that the rod 4 can pivot only in the transverse direction and in that it comprises only a single flexible blade 16' .

However, these features are aimed at improving the efficiency of skating and not the protection of the lower leg, especially the ankle, of the user.
So that the article of footwear is comfortable while effectively protecting the user against risks of injury, according to the invention, the extreme range of rotation in the transverse direction extends over 50 degrees to 70 degrees and the normal range of Rotation in the transverse direction extends 30 degrees to 50 degrees and is substantially centered with respect to the extreme range of rotation.
Thus, the normal range of rotation is sufficiently wide so that the user can freely flex the ankle in normal use of the article of footwear. The "angular race" remaining to stop progressively the rotation movement before the risk of injury and the abutment is certainly reduced, but it is sufficient for a number of sports that do not require extreme protection.
Advantageously, the damping means comprise a flexible blade having a first end connected to one of the two shells and a second end moving freely in the normal range of rotation and abutting on the other shell between the normal range of rotation and the extreme range of rotation.
This achievement is simple and provides good robustness for a moderate cost.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the flexible blade is bonded to said shell near the joint. This achievement offers a good comfort to the user.
Preferably, the flexible blade has a curved portion extending around the hinge, which makes it easy to bind the flexible blade to the hull.

The damping means 14 consist of two elastically
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, during a bending movement of the user's ankle around the
As shown in FIG. 2, the amplitude α 1 of the free bending movement allowed by the
Conversely, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 3, during an extension movement of a user's ankle around the
As shown in FIG. 3, the amplitude α 2 of the free extension movement authorized by the
The extent of normal rotation allowing the user to move his ankle effortlessly in the
Furthermore, the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 allows a rotation of the
During a pronation / supination movement of a user's ankle around the
The amplitude of each of the free pronation and supination movements is about 10 degrees (ie a pronation / supination free amplitude of about 20 degrees) and it is still advantageously possible to rotate in the direction of elongation of about 5 degrees before reaching abutment along this direction of articulation.
The absence of translation and rotation in the direction of elevation and rotation in the direction of
It is then not necessary to provide a second flexible blade in that the flexible blade 16 'has sufficient characteristics.

- Item of footwear (1), which is intended for sporting use, in particular motorcycling, comprising:- a first rigid shell which defines a body (2) which is intended to receive the foot of a user and which extends in an extension direction (8),- a second rigid shell which defines an upper (4) which is intended to receive the leg of the user and which extends substantially in an upright direction (10),- an articulation (6) which connects the body and the upper, said articulation allowing the upper to rotate relative to the body in a transverse direction (12) which is substantially perpendicular to the extension direction (8) and the upright direction (10), in order to allow flexion of the foot of the user,- stop means for limiting the rotation of the upper (4) relative to the body (2) in the transverse direction (12) within a maximum rotation range, said stop means comprising:• first stop means comprising a first element (32a) which is connected to the body and a second element (32b) which is connected to the upper, one coming into contact with the other in order to limit the rotation of the upper (4) relative to the body (2) in the transverse direction (12) in a first rotation direction,• second stop means comprising a first element (34a) which is connected to the body and a second element (34b) which is connected to the upper, one coming into contact with the other in order to limit the rotation of the upper (4) relative to the body (2) in the transverse direction (12) in a second rotation direction counter to the first rotation direction,- damping means (14) having an inactive state when the upper and the body move relative to each other within a normal rotation range, which is not zero and which is strictly included within the maximum rotation range, so that the damping means are active only when the upper and the body move relative to each other between the normal rotation range and the maximum rotation range, said damping means comprising:• first damping means (16, 18, 20) which produce a couple in the transverse direction opposing the moving together of the first and second stop elements of the first stop means, and• second damping means (16, 18, 22) which produce a couple in the transverse direction opposing the moving together of the first and second stop elements of the second stop means,
said item of footwear being characterised in that
the articulation which connects the body to the upper has pivot passages (46) which are of oblong shape in the upright direction, and
the maximum rotation range in the transverse direction (12) extends from 50 degrees to 70 degrees and the normal rotation range in the transverse direction (12) extends from 30 degrees to 50 degrees and is substantially centred relative to the maximum rotation range. - Item of footwear according to claim 1, characterised in that the range of the free pronation and supination movements is approximately 20 degrees in total.
- Item of footwear according to either claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that the damping means comprise a thin flexible plate (16, 18) which has a first end (16b, 18b) which is connected to one (4) of the two shells and a second end (16a, 18a) which moves freely within the normal rotation range and which comes into abutment with the other shell (2) between the normal rotation range and the maximum rotation range.
- Item of footwear according to claim 3, characterised in that the thin flexible plate (16) is connected to said shell (4) near the articulation (6).
- Item of footwear according to claim 3 or claim 4, characterised in that the thin flexible plate (16) has a curved portion (44) which extends around the articulation (24, 26).
- Item of footwear according to claim 5, characterised in that it comprises two thin flexible plates (16, 18) which are arranged symmetrically relative to a centre plane (P) which is defined by the extension direction (8) and the upright direction (10), said thin flexible plates being connected (36) to each other at the connected end (16b, 18b) thereof.
- Item of footwear according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the first damping means (16, 18, 20) and the second damping means (16, 18, 22) are each active over a rotation range in the transverse direction (12) of from 5 to 20 degrees.
