Abstract

The connector has a knife strip (1) and a spring step (2) of plastic which each have signal contacts (5) each surrounded by screening elements, arranged in rows and columns. Ground strips (3) in the knife strips run over its entire length and are arranged between adjacent signal contact rows. Ground plates (4) are arranged in the spring strip between adjacent signal contact columns. Each ground strip is formed with pin-shaped ground contacts arranged in the inter-grid to the signal contacts. A plug-in contact is produced with each ground plate by the ground contacts.

Description

The invention relates to an electrical connector arrangement with a knife and a female connector made of insulating material, each of which has a plurality of signal contacts arranged in columns and rows, which can be connected to one another by plugging, each individual signal contact being shielded on all sides by sheet metal elements.

Low frequency circuit board connectors are increasingly being operated with faster digital signals. The very steep signal rising edges correspond to high frequencies. This creates problems with the signal transmission quality, in particular undesirable crosstalk effects arise between adjacent signal contacts.

Conventionally, the crosstalk problem can be solved by passing the signals only over every second contact while the contacts in between are grounded. With this solution, however, the number of connections which can be used for signal transmission is drastically reduced, so that it appears to be of little use for applications with a high signal density.

From DE 40 40 551 C2 it is known to prevent crosstalk between adjacent connections in adjacent vertical rows by inserting a shielding element between the vertical connection rows of a female connector. A disadvantage of this solution, however, is that only three rows of the five available contact rows are usable for signals, and two rows are grounded. From EP 0 486 298 A1, on the other hand, a connector arrangement is known in which ground contacts are arranged offset by half a division between the signal contacts are, so that the signal contacts are surrounded by ground contacts when plugged in. This solution is also not ideal insofar as the individual contacts for grounding are all individually contacted in the printed circuit boards and thus make the unbundling of the signals considerably more difficult.

From Market and Technology - Weekly newspaper for electronics, No. 26 of June 24, 1994, pages 36 to 37, a member of the 2.5 mm connector family "SIPAC" has become known according to the preamble of claim 1 cited above. However, each individual contact is continuously shielded with a dense, metallic, square shaft. The "compartment" required for this shaft of longitudinal and transverse sheets, which are arranged at a distance of 2.5 mm from one another, is arranged entirely within the female connector. Slits must therefore be provided at the penetration points of the transverse and longitudinal sheets, which interlock and make high-quality electrical contact.

The invention has for its object an improved
To create connectors that can be used in particular as a printed circuit board connector that prevents unwanted crosstalk effects and that is easy to manufacture.

This object is achieved according to the invention in a connector arrangement of the type mentioned at the outset by
  • a) that ground strips running over their entire length are provided and are arranged between adjacent signal contact rows,
  • b) that ground plates are arranged in the female connector between adjacent signal contact gaps,
  • c) and that each ground strip is designed with pin-shaped, arranged in the intermediate grid to the signal contacts ground contacts through which a pluggable electrical Contact can be made with any of the mass plates.

Weiterbildungen der Erfindung sind Gegenstand von Unteransprüchen.Developments of the invention are the subject of dependent claims.

Different versions of the all-round shielding of the signal contacts by meshing all ground contacts or by additional external shield walls.

The present invention combats crosstalk with ground strips and ground plates, which, separated by knife and female connectors, lie between the rows of contacts or the contact gaps. This creates a mesh of all ground contacts with a homogeneous shielding effect regardless of the contact position in the PCB connector. The exact arrangement of the ground strips 3 or ground platelets 4 in the connector can best be seen in FIGS. 1 and 2, while the meshing is best seen in FIGS. 3 to 7.

In Figure 1 and in particular 2 shows how a pluggable electrical contact of the ground plate 4 with the pin contacts 5 of the ground strip 3 is made. This contact remains guaranteed over the entire plug area and the service life of the plug. The ground plates 4 are preferably connected to the printed circuit board using press-fit technology, sometimes on the edge of the board, sometimes behind the Signal connections to make the unbundling of the signals as difficult as possible. The ground strips 3 run over the entire connector length, they are connected at regular intervals to the printed circuit board using press-fit technology, as indicated in FIG. 2. The distance between the connection points 6 is chosen so that the unbundling is disturbed as little as possible and the shielding effect remains optimal. The position of the signal contacts is indicated in FIGS. 1 and 2 by "S".

The grounding plates 4 and grounding strips 3 can advantageously be pressed in via the insulating body, so that the pressing tools can be kept as simple as possible. In combination with external shield plates 7, ground plates 4 and strips 3, as shown in FIGS. 4 to 7, can be operated independently of the shield plates or can also be connected to them. This applies both to two side shield plates, compare FIGS. 4 and 5, and to a 360 ° circumferential shield cage, compare FIGS. 6 and 7.
