Definitions
- a connector is formed by two elements of support possibly forming housings, which carry each a series of contacts, each contact in the series of an element cooperating with a contact of the series of the other element.
- a first type of contact is made under the form of plugs and sockets, i.e. a contact male sliding into female contact. This sliding results in a long assembly run, efforts that become relatively high when the number of contacts is important, contact efforts weak and variable (relaxation during cycles of temperature, limited contact surfaces, reliable connector lock systems and the sensitivity to "fretting" corrosion caused by micro-sliding between contacts).
- Another type of contact is mounted sliding in a cell of its support element while being stressed outwards by an elastic means of reminder and is next to a contact of the other element which it can meet by its frontal face.
- Such contacts are, for example, described in documents US-A-4,431,242, US-A-2,742,626, WO-A-94/11925, EP-A-0 256 541 and EP-A-0 009 314.
- each of the contacts of an element repels the corresponding contact of the other element and moves back himself in his housing cell against the action of its recall spring.
- the two contacts are thus contact with each other with a pressure that can be important and which is insensitive to variations in temperature ; there is no relative displacement of two contacts which would produce wear during assembly.
- the connection stroke can be very short, which facilitates mounting.
- the front faces of the contacts are spherical, concave for the contacts of one of the elements and convex for those of the other, as illustrated in documents US-A-4,431,242 or US-A-2,742,626. a self-centering of the contacts then takes place which prevents micro-sliding of the contact surfaces one on the other.
- the elastic means of recalling the contact is preferably consisting of a one-piece corrugated tongue with the contact as illustrated in the documents WO-A-94/11925, EP-A-0 256 541 or EP-A-0 009 314. From this way, the contact and its spring can then be economically made from a single piece of departure.
- contacts involving individually reported springs such as those described in documents US-A-4,431,242 and US-A-2,742,626, require support members expensive because necessarily made up of several parts assembled to allow installation first of contacts, then springs, and finally their locking by a patch. This assembly is also very tedious.
- the wavy tongue can be, in the complete connector, either with male contact or with female contact or both.
- the link elastic is ensured when at least one contact on both have this wavy tab.
- the contact elastic can be directly applied to a surface complementary formed on a conductive part.
- the subject of the present invention is a connector which overcomes these disadvantages.
- a connector comprising two elements in each of which contacts are formed by a head mounted sliding against the action of a one-piece corrugated tongue with the head, each contact of an element cooperating with a contact of the other element next to which it is and which it can meet by its front face, because the wavy tongue is itself one piece with a body in which the contact head can slide and which is extended at its end opposite the head by a part connection to an electrical conductor.
- the body may have tabs folded outwards and clean to come in abutment against a shoulder of a housing cell contact in the element, and / or may have elastic retention tabs folded towards outside and coming, after the installation of a contact in its cell, engage behind a shoulder of the socket preventing removal of contact.
- the body may have one or more several notches in which are inserted by the one or more contact locking parts in its element cell.
- the body may have one or more external bridges of preliminary maintenance by friction of the contact in its element socket.
- this body provides a very large area for the development of powerful means of attachment of the spring tab and head in the socket.
- the means of attachment more or less forward on the body to optimize its click-in and its retention, that it either permanent or removable.
- these means hooking may as well be male in the form tabs folded outwards, only females in the form of notches made only in body thickness so as not to interfere with the displacement of the internal wavy tongue.
- the body has a polygonal section, and each of its faces is stiffened by a rib internal. It is also possible to provide stamped bowls in the background of the undulations of the tongue.
- the body may present a tongue folded inwards and ensuring support of the last undulations of the tongue.
- This body can also present in its front opening a tongue folded in the head acting as a stop stroke limitation, and contributing to the rigidity of the body.
- the wavy tongue can be cut in the center a blank, or strip format, from which the contact is formed, or, preferably, be arranged laterally with respect to the blank from which the contact is formed.
- the connector according to the invention comprises an element of female connector housing 1 and a male element 2 can partially fit into element 1, with interposition of a seal 3; means no represented, integrated into elements 1 and 2 or made up by an additional part, can be provided for lock the two elements 1 and 2 assembled one at a time the other.
- Each of the male 2 and female 1 elements is consisting of an insulating shell 4 made of plastic in which are molded cells 5 containing contacts 6 and nine in number in the example of shown achievement.
- Each cell 5 comprises, at its inner end, a longitudinal groove 5a which is connects to the cell by a shoulder 5b; to his other end, it has two longitudinal grooves diametrically opposed 5c which connect to the cell by shoulders 5d.
- Each of the contacts 6 is a copper alloy, possibly covered with a metallic layer of corrosion protection, e.g. tin, nickel or gold, and cut from a strip 7 ( Figures 5, 10 and 12), then folded.
- Contact 6 includes an outer head 8a or 8b which is connected by a wavy tab 9 to a body 10 guiding the head; this body is extended at its opposite end to the head by a rear connection part 11 which can be fixed on a conductor for example by crimping, welding or stitching.
- the head 8a of a contact of the female connector 1a a concave spherical shape while the head 8b of a contact of the male connector has a convex spherical shape, with the same curvature as the head 8a.
- the body 10 has a square section and each of its faces are stiffened by an internal rib 12 la stiffening, ensuring better sliding of undulations of the tongue 9 and completing the surfaces of electrical conduction. It also presents tabs 13 folded outwards intended to come in abutment against the shoulder 5b of a cell 5, and elastic retention tabs 14 also folded outward and coming, after the installation of the contact, engage behind the shoulder 5d of the cell preventing the withdrawal of the contact thereof.
- the tongue 9 can be cut in the center of the blank from which contact is formed, such as shows figure 5, or be lateral to this blank as well as seen in Figure 10; this second solution allows to make a greater number of ripples in the tongue.
- a method of making the contact illustrated in Figures 6, 7 starts with the cut (a) in a metal strip of a blank according to the format illustrated on figure 10.
- This format presents a left part substantially double T predicted to become the part rear connection of the contact to the cable; a part substantially rectangular right planned to become the body enveloping contact; as well as a tongue longitudinal connected to the rear of the front part by a side leg, and intended to become the head of contact with its wavy spring tab.
- One or more punching operations then create the ribs 12, the tongue internal rear spring stroke limitation 16 as well as the rear hooking tabs 14 and front 13 of the future body in its alveolus.
- a first folding operation (c) at an angle right allows the lower edge to be raised upwards, marked by hatching, the front part containing the hooking tab 13. This edge is called to become the future upper face of the contact, as illustrated on Figures 6 and 7.
- ripples are formed (d1) successively in the longitudinal tongue from from its end close to its lateral connecting tab, to make the spring tab 9.
- the head of contact 8 is finally made at the other end of this longitudinal tab.
- the spring tab 9 with its head is then folded over the blank after three folds (d2, d3, d4), the crests of the undulations being found, after such a rotation of 270 degrees, parallel to the first edge previously noted.
- the two edges of the rear part are then simultaneously raised by a double fold (e), which causes the side walls of the front body to rise according to a fold in the continuation of those of the part back.
- the first raised edge then arrives at the horizontal to constitute the upper face which abuts the upper end of the side wall in correspondence. If necessary, a matrix can then come close laterally to confirm the position side walls and top wall, and so give to the body its final form.
- FIG. 12 illustrates a variant of blank format, in which the front part is previously sheared to reveal a cut 25 median longitudinal. So after training attachment structures 21 and 22, and before or after the production of the spring tab 9, simultaneously a quadruple fold (c ') towards the top of the outer edges of the front and inner edges of section 25, these edges being marked by hatching in this figure 12. These four edges thus form two upper face halves and two face halves lower. We then find us in the presence of two half-hulls connected by a rear deck to the part of connection. After folding the spring tab by triple fold (d2, d3, d4) inside the half-shell adjacent, the body is closed during the formation of the rear part by double fold (e) following.
- the correct alignment of the half-shells can be confirmed by a tab 26 protruding from the end of one of the side faces of the body, this tab being planned to pass through the contact head and come install in a wedge notch made in match in the edge of the other side face.
- heads 8a and 8b protrude at rest relative to the body 10 of the contact. But the heads 8a of the contacts of the element may not overflow as shown in the Figure 11, while the heads 8b of the contacts on the other element are protruding.
- the heads 8b penetrate into the body of the contacts of the other element, they center in this body, improving the guidance and the surface of contact.
