Abstract

A multi-hulled boat has at least three hulls, with the outside hulls extending forward beyond the central or inside hull or hulls. The hulls are tapered with a cross-sectional configuration that increases in side front to rear, thus forming a channel or tunnel between adjacent hulls which decreases in cross-sectional size front to rear. Air entering the tunnels is compressed, thus imparting a lifting force to the hulls lifting the hulls partially out of the water to decrease the hydraulic drag on the hulls. The hulls have identical cross-sectional areas at identical transverse planar sections thereof. The bottom of each hull is flat and inclined at an angle with the horizontal. The hull bottoms join the hull sides at a chamfer which increases in size front to rear. Shutters or flaps may be used to partially or fully close off the tunnels between the hulls to control airflow or to trap water-borne material to be collected and recycled.

Description

The present invention relates to a multi-hull boat. There are already boats with several parallel hulls. Two hull boats are called "catamarans". There are also boats with three hulls, also called trimarans, in which the central hull is longer than the side hulls, these side hulls actually playing much more the role of stabilization floats than actually hulls.
It is also known from French patent 2,586,001 to make a boat comprising four hulls, the central hulls of which are shorter than the lateral hulls. Such a structure makes it possible to improve the performance of the boat while reducing the draft thereof and improving its stability.
The present invention relates to a boat of the last type cited, that is to say of the type comprising at least three parallel hulls, each central hull being shorter than the side hulls, and the front end of each central hull being set back by compared to the front ends of the side shells. The object of the invention is to provide a boat whose performance is improved, while requiring propulsion means of reduced power.
To this end, in the boat to which it relates, each hull has a width which increases continuously from its front end to its rear end.
Advantageously and according to another characteristic of the invention, the side walls of each shell are substantially vertical and flat.
The fact that the side hulls are longer than the central hulls and protrude from them at the front of the boat ensures the formation of a kind of funnel, forcing the air to rush inside the tunnels demarcated between the different hulls. Because the passage section of these tunnels is reduced from front to rear, the air pressure increases from front to rear, ensuring excellent lift of the boat, favoring the planing of that -ci, which limits the value of the submerged volume, and therefore allows to obtain excellent performance with a completely reduced engine. According to another characteristic of the invention, the bottom of each shell is substantially flat, and inclined from rear to front and from bottom to top, forming with the horizontal an angle of between 0.5 and 5 °. Given this inclination of the bottom of the hulls, when the boat begins to plan under the action of speed, the flat and inclined bottoms of the different hulls offer resistance to air, which will achieve their level of dynamic lift. The angle of these bottoms is advantageously between 1 and 3 °. In addition, advantageously, the face of the floor covering the shells, facing downward, is inclined from rear to front and from top to bottom. Preferably the face of the floor facing down is substantially parallel to the bottom of the shells. It follows from this last characteristic that the height of the tunnel formed between two adjacent shells decreases from front to rear, which further increases the phenomenon of air compression always with a view to improving aerodynamic lift. It should be noted that this compression is accompanied by perfectly laminar flow, taking into account the general shapes of the shells defined previously. In order to facilitate the manufacture of the hulls, and to offer them good damping capacities with respect to water, the bottom of each hull is connected to each side wall thereof, by a flat surface of intermediate inclination, forming a chamfer, the height of this inclined surface decreasing regularly from the rear to the front as a function of the inclination of the bottom, until it vanishes at the front end of the hull . It follows from this characteristic that it is the height of the chamfer which determines the inclination of the bottom of each shell.
According to an advantageous characteristic, the rear ends of the different hulls are aligned in the same plane transverse to the axis of the boat, and the cross section of the different hulls is the same over the entire length of the latter, up to the end before the shortest hulls. This structure facilitates the realization of the boat, since all the hulls are identical from their rear end to the level of the front end of the shortest hulls, the side hulls simply extending relative to the other hulls, by an area which is more tapered.
According to one possibility, each tunnel formed between two hulls is equipped with a flap which, articulated at its front end about a horizontal axis, under the connecting floor between the hulls and substantially at mid-length of the boat, is associated to means for adjusting its inclination.
Each shutter which can be actuated for example by a jack allows, if necessary is to reinforce the action which results from the inclination of the floors connecting the shells.
Compte-tenu des volumes disponibles à l'intérieur des coques et de la légèreté de l'ensemble, l'embarcation peut être rendue insubmersible en plaçant à l'intérieur des coques un matériau expansé par exemple à trente kilos par m3.This boat which may for example have four hulls, or even a larger number of hulls is advantageous taking into account the lift characteristics which it presents, and which make it possible to limit the power of the motorization. In addition, it should be noted that it is advantageous to multiply the number of engines, which are low power engines by placing one in each hull, which in addition offers perfect security since in the event of a breakdown of the one of the engines, the boat can continue its course using the other engines. They can be conventional propellants or hydrojet type surface propellants. Given the volumes available inside the hulls and the lightness of the assembly, the boat can be made unsinkable by placing an expanded material inside the hulls, for example at thirty kilos per m3.
This type of boat is just as suitable for pleasure craft as it is for star type boats for the transport of passengers or commercial boats for the transport of vehicles or containers. In all cases, the boat planes at a speed of the order of 15 knots, beyond which the wetted surface is greatly reduced since the length at the waterline during navigation is reduced by 2/3.
It is also to consider other applications of this boat, for example in the context of the fight against pollution, by taking advantage of the tunnels made between the different hulls to recover using pivoting shutters around their edge. aft of waste likely to float on the surface, and recovering it in settling tanks placed on the aft deck of the boat.
In any case, the invention will be better understood with the aid of the description which follows with reference to the appended schematic drawings representing, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of this boat in the case of its application to the embodiment of a speedboat, Figure 1 is a side view, Figure 2 is a front view from the front, Figure 3 is a front view from the rear, Figure is a sectional view along the line IV-IV of figure 1. The boat represented in the drawing comprises four identical hulls two by two, namely two lateral hulls 2 and two central hulls (3). The lateral (2) and central (3) shells have posterior ends which are arranged in the same plane transverse to the axis of the boat. As shown in the drawing, each lateral (2) or central (3) shell has a triangular shape in cross-section through a horizontal plane, its width increasing from its front end to its rear end. In addition, as shown in particular in Figure 3, the two side walls () are substantially vertical and planar.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the bottom (5) of each shell is substantially flat and inclined from rear to front and from bottom to top, forming with the horizontal an angle of between 0.5 and 5 °, and preferably between 1 and 3 °. The bottom 5 of each shell is connected to the two side walls (<) thereof by a flat surface (6) of intermediate inclination forming a chamfer, the height of this surface (6) decreasing regularly from the rear to the forward depending on the inclination of the bottom. It follows from these forms that the shells are easily achievable, and inexpensive, for example in low density metal alloy such as an aluminum alloy.
De façon connue en soi, les coques sont maintenues en forme par un certain nombre de couples transversaux (7) dont certains ont été schématisés à la figure < .In a manner known per se, the shells are held in shape by a number of transverse couples (7), some of which have been shown diagrammatically in FIG.
To simplify manufacture, it should be noted that, as shown in the figure, the cross section of the different hulls (2,3) is the same over the entire length of these until the front end of the shortest hulls. . This makes it possible to standardize the manufacture, the two side shells (2) being simply provided with respect to the central shells (3) of a tapered extension forward. The different shells are assembled to each other by couples, and by a floor (8) whose face turned downward is inclined from rear to front and from bottom to top.
This characteristic participates with the widening of the hulls from front to rear to reduce the section of air passage between the hulls, which promotes the phenomenon of lift.
The boat which has been represented in the drawing has superstructures corresponding to those of a speedboat, but could just as easily have other superstructures, for example insofar as it would be intended to collect it on the surface of the water. pollution waste in which case it would be advisable to have shutters at the level of the tunnels to collect the waste, and transfer it to settling tanks which can be located for example on a beach provided at the rear of the boat. As is apparent from the above, the invention brings a great improvement to the existing technique by providing a boat of simple design, offering very high performance, with a motorization of reduced power. This results in savings both in terms of manufacturing and in terms of operation and maintenance.
As it goes without saying, the invention is not limited to the sole embodiment of this boat described above by way of example, on the contrary it embraces all of the variant embodiments thereof.
Thus, in particular, the number of hulls could be different, the main thing being that the central hulls are shorter than the lateral hulls to ensure this funneling phenomenon which channels the air towards the tunnels formed between the hulls or else that the tunnels could be limited in the upper part by hinged flaps, without departing from the scope of the invention.
