Description

The present invention relates to a method of mixing the various components of a product and to a device comprising a detachable cartridge used for this purpose.

Industry very often uses products in the form of two or more components which must be mixed just before use; By way of example, mention may be made of adhesives, the two components of which are to be combined and mixed just before application. Generally, the packaging of said product into several components is necessary because their union generates a chemical process of polymerization, hardening or more generally a change of state.

The mixing of the components of a product of this kind is generally done in a mixer which can be either a static mixer or a dynamic mixer. In a static mixer, used mainly for relatively fluid products, the various components are pressed together through a set of baffles in order to be intimately mixed. In a dynamic mixer, generally used for more viscous products, the various components are introduced into a mixing chamber where a blade, driven by a stirring movement, is responsible for mixing.

The major drawback of the dynamic mixers of the prior art lies in the fact that after extraction of the mixed product from said mixing chamber, a certain amount of said mixed product remains in the chamber and, after a while, changes state under the effect of the chemical reaction. The time required for this change can be very variable, depending on the components used as well as the surrounding conditions; this duration can thus be less than a minute or more than an hour. Therefore, each time the device is stopped for a time greater than the time necessary for the initiation or the completion of the chemical reaction, either because of the shutdown of the production machine arranged downstream , or due to a temporary absence of the operator, it is necessary to dismantle the dynamic mixer and completely clean the mixing chamber as well as the extraction orifice, in order to remove all the particles of mixed product that have hardened. This cleaning operation can be long and dangerous due to the use of the products or solvents necessary for this purpose.

Un autre inconvénient de ce dispositif est que les composants à mélanger sont introduits longitudinalement par la portion de fond non amovible en un endroit où la pale de brassage a peu d'efficacité, créant ainsi une zone où les composants se mélangent mal.US-A-4,951,843 describes a mixing device comprising a portion of a removable mixing chamber; a drawback of this device lies in the fact that the mixing blade is independent of the chamber, thereby necessitating separate cleaning of the mixing blade, of the removable portion of the chamber as well as of the non-removable bottom portion of the mixing device. Another drawback of this device is that the components to be mixed are introduced longitudinally through the non-removable bottom portion at a place where the mixing paddle has little effectiveness, thus creating an area where the components mix poorly.

A first object of the invention is to propose a method making it possible to facilitate or even eliminate this cleaning operation, this object being obtained by a method corresponding to the characteristics of claim 1.

Another object of the invention is to propose a method allowing, by judiciously arranging the component inlet holes in the mixing chamber, to obtain efficient mixing without creating a dead zone; this object is obtained, according to several construction variants, by the characteristics of claims 2 to 6.

Encore un autre but de l'invention est de proposer un dispositif mélangeur dynamique apte à réaliser le procédé de mélange selon l'invention, qui répond aux caractéristiques des revendications 7 et 8, alors qu'une cartouche détachable destinée à être utilisée par le dispositif ci-dessus, comporte, pour plusieurs variantes d'exécution, les caractéristiques des revendications 9 à 12.Yet another object of the invention is to provide a dynamic mixing device capable of carrying out the mixing method according to the invention, which meets the characteristics of claims 7 and 8, while a detachable cartridge intended to be used by the device above, comprises, for several variant embodiments, the characteristics of claims 9 to 12.

To better understand the invention, reference can be made to the accompanying drawing with the figures where:
  • FIG. 1 shows in perspective, a general view of an installation for mixing a product with two components, comprising a dynamic mixing device according to the invention, and
  • FIG. 2 represents a part of the mixing device according to a preferred form of the invention on an enlarged scale.

An installation for mixing 1 of two components A and B of a product can consist, for example, as seen in FIG. 1, of a reservoir 10 of a first component A, the outlet of which is connected to a volumetric doser 11, as well as to a reservoir 12 of a second component B, the outlet orifice of which is connected to another volumetric doser 13, as well as to a dynamic mixer 2, each of which two orifices d input 20A and 20B is connected to an outlet orifice of a volumetric metering device 11, respectively 13, by pipes, preferably flexible. The component tanks 10 and 12 as well as the volumetric dosers 11 and 13 forming part of the state of the technique are not further described here; one can only indicate that they are responsible for supplying the dynamic mixer 2, by its supply orifices 20A and 20B, by component A, respectively B, continuously, intermittently or on demand, being controlled by a device automatic control also part of the prior art and not shown in the figure.

Various variants can be considered concerning the constitution of the mixing installation 1; in particular it is not essential that the metering devices be of the volumetric type as indicated, they are more generally product distributors known in the art, for example of the volumetric type as shown or of the timed type or even of another known type; on the other hand, each of said product distributors can be made up of a single element, grouping together the product reservoir and the metering device. Likewise the dynamic mixer as well as the product distributors can also be made up in a single element, thus eliminating the flexible connecting pipes. Finally, said installation can be intended to mix more than two components, thereby requiring more than two product distributors.

The dynamic mixer 2 according to the invention comprises a portion of fixing body, preferably consisting of a first fixed body portion 21B, and a second movable body portion 21A, the two body portions being connected by a hinge 22 and can therefore be opened, as shown in the figure, or closed as indicated by the arrow. A locking device 23, of known execution, is arranged on the faces of the two portions opposite to those comprising the hinge 22, in order to ensure closing and locking the two body portions 21A and 21B. The body portion 21A and the body portion 21B each comprise a housing, preferably of semi-cylindrical shape 24A, respectively 24B which, when the two portions 21A and 21B are folded over one another, face each other so to compose a housing preferably cylindrical, extending over the entire height of the two said portions. In addition, the upper face of each of the portions 21A and 21B comprises a recess 25A, respectively 25B, the usefulness of which will be explained below. Each of the portions 21A and 21B further comprises a pipe 26A, respectively 26B, connected on one side to the inlet orifices 20A, respectively 20B and each opening by a nozzle 27A, respectively 27B in the side wall of the semi-cylindrical housing 24A , respectively 24B.

The mixing chamber of the dynamic mixing device according to the invention consists of a detachable cartridge 3, consisting of a hollow envelope body 30, preferably of cylindrical shape, but which can be of any other suitable shape and the dimensions of which outer correspond to the dimensions of the housing disposed in the fixing portion, respectively whose outer diameter corresponds to the inner diameter of the cylindrical housing formed by the two semi-cylindrical housings 24A and 24B and whose height corresponds approximately to that of said cylindrical housing. The hollow casing body 30 has its open upper end, a flange 31, of any cross section but not circular, extending transversely out of the upper end of the hollow casing body 30. The shape of the flange 31 is adapted to that of the hollows 25A and 25B, so that said hollow casing body is firmly held inside the cylindrical housing when the two portions 21A and 21B are closed, and that said hollow envelope body can easily be inserted into, or extracted from, said cylindrical housing when the two portions 21A and 21B are open. Two orifices 32A and 32B (better visible in FIG. 2), corresponding to the nozzles 27A and 27B, are adjusted to the dimensions of said nozzles and put them in connection with the internal part of said hollow casing body. The lower end of the hollow casing body 30 is closed for the most part, leaving just an outlet orifice 33 also formed in the nozzle. Inside the hollow envelope body 30, there is a stirring device 34, consisting of a body with a cylindrical axis 35, of diameter slightly less than the inside diameter of the hollow envelope body 30, surmounted by a drive head 36, which may for example be of cylindrical shape, of larger diameter, so that a portion of the crown formed by the outer part of the lower surface of said drive head can rest on the upper face of the flange 31. A diametrical slot 37 is provided on the upper face of the drive head 36, in order to rotate said stirring device, as indicated below. One or more mixing blades 38 are fixed to the lower part of the body of cylindrical axis 35, so as to best use the mixing space located in the lower part of the hollow casing body 30. An annular seal 39, fixed close to the lower part of the body of cylindrical axis 35, is intended to seal between the mixing space and the portion of casing body disposed above said mixing space; the annular seal 39 must also allow the body of the cylindrical axis 35 to rotate inside the hollow casing body 30.

The detachable cartridge 3 is made of a material resistant to the components to be mixed as well as to the finished product; since it is generally disposable after use, as will be seen below, it can be made of a cheaper material, possibly only resistant for a limited period to the products mentioned above. The dimensions of the stirring space must be adapted to the quantity of product required, this quantity possibly being as small as a few hundredths of a milliliter.

The dynamic mixer 2 is completed with a drive part 4, visible in FIG. 1, comprising a motor 40, driving an axis 41 by means, for example, of a set of pulleys and belt 42. The lower part of the axis 41 is provided with a drive end 43, comprising a tongue 44 capable of engaging in the diametrical slot 37 of the drive head 36. This drive part 4 is relatively conventional, this is why it is not described more precisely here; the motor 40 is preferably an electric motor controlled by the automatic control device mentioned above.

As a variant, the portion of the fixing body may be made up of a single portion, the detachable cartridge 3 being introduced for example by the upper end of a housing arranged inside said single portion; in this case, the drive part 4 is pivoting or sliding relative to said single portion in order to leave the space necessary for the introduction of the detachable cartridge.

It is further noted on the preferred embodiment of the detachable cartridge of FIG. 2, that the axes of the pipes 26A and 26B, respectively the nozzles 27A and 27B introduce radially components inside the brewing space; moreover they are not aligned face to face but the nozzle 27A is located opposite and above the nozzle 27B. In this way, the upper part of the brewing space, the region where brewing is not as good, is occupied by only one of the components of the mixture, thus avoiding a risk of chemical transformation at this place which could clog up the seal 39 and prevent rotation of the stirring device 34. Preferably, the component introduced by the upper nozzle will be that present in greater proportion in the mixture or else the base resin of said product, while the lower nozzle will introduce the component intervening in smaller proportion or the hardener for example.

It is now possible to describe the operation of the dynamic mixing device 2 according to the invention with reference to FIG. 1. When the device for supplying components A and B is stopped and the two portions 21A and 21B are open, it it is possible to introduce a detachable cartridge 3, consisting of the hollow casing body 30 containing the stirring device 34 inside the semi-cylindrical housing 24B, ensuring that the flange 31 is properly inserted into the recess 25B , that the nozzle 27B is properly introduced into the inlet orifice 32B and that the tongue 44 is engaged in the diametrical slot 37 of the drive head 36. It is then now possible to fold the movable portion 21A onto the fixed portion 21B, the semi-cylindrical housing 24A thus completely surrounding the hollow casing body 30, the recess 25A coming to complement the support offered to the flange 31, while the nozzle 27A is introduced into inlet 32A. The two portions 21A and 21B are then locked at using device 23.

The feed device, the volumetric dosers 11 and 13 respectively, as well as the motor 40 are started by the automatic control device, in order to inject into the mixing space a determined quantity of components A and B and of mix these two components using the stirring paddle (s) 38. When the components A and B have been sufficiently mixed and constitute a homogeneous product, the volumetric dosers 11 and 13 will inject a new quantity of the components A and B, this which will eject the mixed product through the outlet port 33, for use in the rest of the process. As indicated above, the automatic control device is programmed so that the mixed product leaves the outlet orifice 33 as required, either drop by drop at a determined rate, or in a continuous stream, or then on demand.

If the distribution of the product is stopped for any reason whatsoever, for a period longer than that necessary for the components assembled in the brewing space to initiate or complete their chemical transformation, it is generally not possible to do start the stirring blades directly since the stirring space is filled with frozen material. It is at this time that one realizes the advantage of the device according to the invention compared to the prior art; if in a mixer according to the prior art it is necessary at this stage to dismantle the mixer and to clean the mixing space, the stirring device, as well as the inlet and outlet ports, an operation which can be long, thus blocking the entire production chain located downstream, and requiring dangerous solvents to use, it is no longer the same with the mixing device according to the invention where it suffices to open the movable body portion 21A and to remove the used detachable cartridge 3 from the fixed body portion 21B, to place there a new detachable cartridge 3, new and clean, as described above . Thus a start of the production chain after a stop of sufficient time to initiate or complete the chemical transformation of the components is much faster and does not require the use of dangerous products on the place of production.

Preferably the detachable cartridge comprising the hollow casing body and the stirring body is designed so that it can be produced in quantity at low cost; thus the cleaning operation is directly eliminated, the detachable cartridge being thrown away when it is dirty. As a variant, and depending on the products used, it is possible to recover the detachable cartridge, completely or only one of its parts, by cleaning it in an appropriate manner, independently of the production cycle.

The above description as well as the figures describe a device for mixing two components; it is understood that the method and the device according to the invention apply equally well to mixtures of more than two components, the number of pipes as well as corresponding inlet nozzles being to be provided in the portions of mixer body as well as the hollow casing body of the detachable cartridge will be provided with the corresponding number of inlet ports.

It is also possible that one of the products introduced into the brewing space is not a component directly involved in the composition of the finished product, but is for example a diluent, a solvent or any product loaded with to delay the onset of the chemical reaction or to rinse the mixing space before or after use; in this case the automatic process control device will control the introduction of said product whatever independently of the introduction of the components necessary for the manufacture of the finished product.

Likewise, the mixing device has been described with an inlet nozzle opening out from the fixed body portion and another inlet nozzle opening out from the movable body portion; it is obvious that it is also possible to unblock the inlet nozzles from the same body portion, whether it is the fixed body portion or the movable body portion.

As a variant, and for certain types of components to be mixed, it may not be necessary for the inlet orifices of the components in the cartridge to be arranged in successive planes; in this case they could be arranged side by side in the same plane. Likewise, the radial entry of the components can sometimes prove to be unsuitable for proper control of the process; in this case, the orifices can be designed so that the components do not penetrate radially but obliquely, preferably directed towards the bottom of the mixing chamber.

Another variant of the device described comprises an improvement making it easier to introduce the tongue 44 of the drive end 43 into the slot 37 of the drive head 36, by providing that said drive end is sliding on the axis 41.

The method, the mixing device and the cartridge according to the invention therefore make it possible to facilitate the use of products with several components in avoiding the operation of cleaning the mixing chamber of the mixer after a shutdown for a certain period, thus leading to an increase in the production rate, respectively a reduction in production costs.
