Description
The invention relates to a silver-nickel composite material for electrical contacts and electrodes, in particular for spark plug electrodes.
Such a silver-nickel composite material in the form of a silver-nickel fiber composite for electrodes and a method for its production are known from DE-OS 2 508 490 (see also DE-A-2361274). A manufacturing process for silver-nickel fiber composite materials can also be found in DE-OS 2 259 636.
From DE-OS 3 213 481 it is also known to have a composite material consisting of two spirally wound silver alloy layers to form by arranging the material in a tube after the spiral rolling up and extruding or pulling it into a wire.
If such composite materials are used for electrical contacts and electrodes, in particular spark plug electrodes, then, because silver is oxygen-permeable, there is a risk that the nickel component surrounded by the silver component will be exposed to chemical attacks, in particular nickel fibers embedded in a silver matrix. This is particularly the case when such silver-nickel composites are used to form spark plug electrodes which are exposed to chemical attacks in the combustion chambers. This reduces the life or running time of the corresponding spark plugs.
Since, due to the increase in electronic components in motor vehicles and the requirements for environmental protection, the installation space in the engine area is becoming increasingly limited and therefore maintenance in the engine area has become very complex, it is desirable to have to replace the spark plugs or ignition contacts as rarely as possible. The same also applies to bio and gas engines, the spark plugs of which should have long running times at very high loads and which, as a rule, can only have platinum spark plugs or electrodes fitted with platinum metals or platinum alloys.
The object on which the invention is based is therefore to create a silver-nickel composite material of the type mentioned at the outset, which allows a longer service life for the electrical contacts and electrodes formed from it and for the devices equipped with these contacts and electrodes, for example spark plugs.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the silver component made of an oxygen-impermeable silver alloy and the nickel component consists of nickel or a nickel alloy.
With the silver-nickel composite according to the invention, oxygen attacks on the nickel component, in particular on nickel fibers in a silver matrix, are prevented, so that there is a higher chemical resistance and the silver-nickel composite according to the invention is suitable as an electrode material for contacts and electrodes with a long service life .
In this context, it is pointed out that EP-A-401 598 discloses a center electrode for spark plugs, which has a copper core which is provided in the area of the ignition tip with a coating made of a silver alloy with reduced oxygen permeability.
When using the silver-nickel composite material according to the invention for spark plug electrodes, there is also good combustion behavior, so that spark plugs with such electrodes have a long service life.
Besonders bevorzugte Ausgestaltungen und Weiterbildungen des erfindungsgemäßen Silber-Nickel-Verbundwerkstoffes sind Gegenstand der Patentansprüche 2 bis 8.Particularly preferred refinements and developments of the silver-nickel composite material according to the invention are the subject of
In the silver-nickel composite material according to the invention, the nickel component in particular can consist of nickel fibers with approximately 1,000 fibers per
It is also possible to alternately roll up silver and nickel sheets in a spiral and then to reduce them to round wires with thin layers, so that the cross-section of silver and nickel areas alternate with one another. Furthermore, alternating silver and nickel tubes can be inserted into each other and reduced to a solid composite material with thin layers. Finally, it is also possible to use nickel tubes instead of nickel fibers, which are embedded in a silver matrix and are filled with fillers which favor the electron leakage, ie with fillers which work on the work function lower, and reworked so that nickel is present as a thin fiber. Such fillers can be metal oxides or semiconductor materials. The composite material formed in this way can be brought into a desired wire shape as a starting material for the central or body electrodes of spark plugs in round or profile shape by multiple non-cutting reworking.
If the center and / or body electrodes of spark plugs consist of such a composite material, very low response voltages result due to the peak effect and field distortion (silver non-magnetic, nickel magnetic), which facilitates cold starts. The even burn-off across the cross-section, in comparison with electrodes that consist only of silver or only nickel and burn off at the edges, in conjunction with the chemical resistance of the electrodes enables a long service life of the spark plug.
The oxygen-tight silver alloy from which the silver component is made according to the invention preferably contains silicon or tin additives or additives of materials with a similar effect, i.e. an effect which makes the silver alloy oxygen-tight, in particular 0.05 to 0.3% by weight of silicon, preferably 0.3% by weight of silicon, or more than 2% by weight of tin being added.
A particularly preferred exemplary embodiment of the invention is described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The single figure shows a partial sectional view of a spark plug.
The material for the
For example, the silver-nickel composite material according to the invention can consist of 20-80% Ni or Ni alloy and the oxygen-impermeable silver with 100 to 6,000 fibers of nickel (nickel alloy) per mm². A preferred nickel alloy contains 0.3% by weight of Mg and 1-4% by weight of Si, with other alloys such as e.g. Inconel 601 or nickel with a chromium content etc. can be used.
The silver-nickel composite material according to the invention can also be used to form electrical contacts, which can consist of the composite material according to the invention as a solid material or can be provided with welded-on disks made of the composite material according to the invention, in which case the carrier material can also be copper or steel , since it is not exposed to the conditions in the engine combustion chamber.
If, instead of nickel fibers, nickel tubes filled with the response voltage-lowering substances are embedded in the silver matrix, metal oxides and semiconductors are used as fillers that withstand the combustion chamber conditions.
A spark plug with a center electrode made of the composite material according to the invention was tested in continuous operation, it being shown that the response voltage remained almost the same over 300 hours of continuous operation (less than 10% change). The minimum erosion was more uniform over the entire spark-coated ignition area compared to other electrode materials, the edges were much more stable compared to the erosion.
The silver-nickel composite material according to the invention is accessible for mass production, the glass melting of a central electrode made of this composite material is possible with commercially available long-life resistant resistance sealing glasses under atmospheric oxygen, the nickel fibers giving the necessary mechanical and thermal stability.
The composite material according to the invention is only minimally attacked chemically, so that long service lives result. The low response voltage allows larger electrode distances.
Palladium zuzugeben. It is also possible, depending on the type of chemical attack to be feared, of the silver component, further additives, for example additives against sulfur attacks, e.g. Add palladium.
The silver-nickel fiber composite material can also be attached only in or on conventional central and / or body electrodes as an attachment or insert at the ignition-side end.
