Abstract

Date displaying device, particularly for an electric clockwork piece capable of displaying dates which correspond in at least two calendars of different systems. The date is displayed in an opto-electronic alphanumerical form on a display unit (2). The passage from one date of a system to another is carried out by actuating one or a plurality of push buttons (not shown). The example appearing in Fig. 1 and 2 is the display of a date in the republican calendar (Fig. 1) and the display of the corresponding date in the gregorian calendar (Fig. 2).

Description

The present invention relates to a date display device, in particular for an electronic timepiece, arranged to distribute and display corresponding date indications in at least two calendars of different systems, in alphanumeric opto-electronic form.

Electronic timepieces including the display of the time are known, this in several time zones, some also including the mechanical or liquid crystal display of cyclical phenomena such as the movement of the tides or the phases of the moon. ; timepieces are also known comprising a calendar with an alphanumeric opto-electronic display making it possible to read the date which can be automatically corrected as a function of the number of days in each month. However, this calendar is only given in one system, the Gregorian system for example. It is therefore not possible, without going through complex conversion tables, to find the same date in a different calendar system, such as, for example, the Republican calendar or the Muslim calendar.

Les indications affichées par cette montre le sont uniquement en caractères "arabo-européens".US-A-4,253,169 describes a watch comprising a device making it possible to calculate and indicate the hours and the days according to the Muslim calendar. The indications displayed by this watch are only in "Arab-European" characters.

Application EP-A-0 195 742 describes an astronomical watch whose indications come from a mechanical movement and can only be read in one language.

The first object of the invention is therefore to create a date display device, which can be used and read by a user who is little or not familiar with the "Arab-European" alphanumeric characters.

This first object of the invention is obtained by a display device comprising the characteristics of the independent claim.

Other objects of the invention, obtained by devices according to the dependent claims, are to provide various embodiments of the device of the independent claim.

Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the detailed description of the subject of the invention with reference to the attached drawing in which
fig. 1 is an elevation view of a dial of an embodiment of the object of the invention displaying a date in the republican calendar,
fig. 2 is a partial view in elevation of a dial of the same embodiment of the invention displaying the same date in a calendar of a different system, in this case the usual calendar in the Western world and which then serves as calendar reference,
fig. 3 is a block diagram of the electronics associated with an embodiment of the subject of the invention,
fig. 4 is a block diagram of the electronics associated with another embodiment of the subject of the invention.

1 and 2 show the characters visible on the dial of a timepiece according to an embodiment of the object of the invention. On this dial 1 is a date display system 2 extending over two lines 3 and 4. On the first line are the day's number as well as the name of the day; in this example given for a republican system calendar, the display indicates "7 vendémiaire", while on the second line 4 is the figure for the year, here "CXCVII". This information is given in its original characters, in alphanumeric characters; here, for example, the year is in Roman numerals. This information can be translated into language intelligible to the user, for example by the automatic and alternating appearance of the year in Arabic numerals, here "197". The opto-electronic display system can be snake or point; the example given in fig. 1 of a date in the Republican calendar requires a point display system; the number of points required in this case is 21 (characters) x 5 (high points) x 5 (points in width) = 525.

The example shown in Figs 1 and 2 corresponds to an embodiment of the object of the invention, namely a display system of the Gregorian calendar and the republican calendar; according to other embodiments, it is possible to have for example a display of the Gregorian calendar and the Muslim calendar or the Israelite calendar or the Japanese calendar, etc., the combination of the possible display of two or more of these calendars being arbitrary. As before, the display is done in alphanumeric characters specific to the language of the user, this generally also requires a point display system whose size of the matrix depends on the type of alphabet used.

The number of connections to the integrated circuit can be reduced by using the multiplexing technique and, if this proves insufficient, the scrolling displays can be used; in this case, it is easy to complete the date by displaying the name of the day, for example. The dial can be completed by a calendar aperture 27 with mechanical calendar.

Fig. 2 shows the same dial displaying the same date as shown in FIG. 1, but in a different system calendar, namely, in this case, the usual Gregorian calendar, the date of September 28, 1988 corresponding to the date of the 7th Vendemiaire CXCVII. The passage of a date from one calendar system to another system is effected by the action on a push button, not shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Each of the dates can be presented in a fixed manner or one can also envisage the automatic passage from one calendar to the other by acting as previously on a push-button; we would have, in this case, an alternate display of dates.

On the other hand, the change of day at midnight of the calendars can be synchronized with the passage at midnight of the time of the analog movement of a timepiece, or not; in the latter case, the calendar has its own internal clock with digital display that is manually synchronized by a push button with the analog movement.

It should be noted that, although the examples described relate to a timepiece retaining its indications of hours, minutes and seconds, it is entirely conceivable to provide a similar system applied only to an electronic calendar.

The production of calendars is based on the technology of digital integrated circuits and segment or point displays.

In fig. 3 and 4, two embodiments of the object of the invention are shown.

Fig. 3 is a block diagram of the control electronics of a first embodiment of the subject of the invention in which the calendars are stored in memory over a number of years, depending on the capacity of the memory. We are then in the presence of a simple reading of the memory, the scrolling of which is controlled by the internal time base.

This diagram shows: a quartz oscillator 5 used to manufacture a stable sinusoidal signal; a divider block 6 used to lower the frequency of the pulses, the sinusoid being transformed into a square signal by means of a trigger; an amplifier 8 and a motor 9 which drives a gear train distributing the information to the hands 11. The crown 10 fixed on a control rod makes it possible to adjust the position of the hands. It should be noted that the whole 8, 9, 10, 11, generally designated by the reference 7, is optional and only applies in the case of a timepiece. This set is deleted when dealing with an electronic calendar only.

The lower branch of the block diagram includes the memory calendars 12, 13, 14, a sequencer 15 which receives its orders from the keys A, B and C and which can be designed in two different ways, namely with recorded program, according to the technique read only memories (ROM), which has the advantage of miniaturization, or else with a wired circuit. This sequencer selects the memories, that is to say the calendars to be read, and it transmits the information collected to the multiplexer for LCD 16 which displays the information on the display 17. The read only memories are only read and contain, in the form binary, the alphanumeric data of each calendar. The function of pushers A, B, C is as follows:
Mode button A:
1st press: setting mode (for example flashing)
2nd press: reading mode
Function button B:
1st case: reading mode: switching from one calendar to another
2nd case: setting mode:
  • setting the hour, minute, and possibly second
  • date setting or display of a specific date (day, month, year)
Increment pusher C:
  • step by step
  • fast forward by scrolling

The hour, minute and possibly second setting function is necessary when dealing with a timepiece with analog movement in which there is no synchronization between the analog movement and the calendar. Likewise, it is necessary in the case of a purely electronic calendar. However, it is not necessary for a timepiece in which there is synchronization, for example from the cog in the analog part of the calendar. In this case, a gear train will cause the calendar to switch every 24 hours, by controlling a contact.

Fig. 4 is a block diagram of the control electronics of another embodiment of the subject of the invention in which the calendars are linked together by a calculation algorithm; it is then possible to add additional functions controlled by external pushers, such as for example:
  • calculation of a known past or future date in a calendar, in the other calendar (s),
  • calculation of durations between two dates, etc.

This diagram shows a quartz oscillator 5, a divider block 6, an amplifier 8, a motor 9 and hands 11, the assembly 7 being, as already mentioned, optional. In addition, in this fig. 4 are represented: a timer 18 which counts events (here pulses received from a division stage), an interrupt block 19 which, when a number of events or pulses fixed in advance has been reached gives an order to interrupt a function displayed on the microprocessor, for example automatic passage from setting mode to reading mode in the event that, after pressing the setting mode key, no setting is made; a microprocessor oscillator 23 (optional); an arithmetic and logic processor 20 which performs in its binary language the calculations necessary for the establishment of non-stored calendars; a ROM or read-only memory 21 which contains a calendar or the cyclical fundamental data of the calendar or the calendar determination program; a RAM or random access memory 22 to which access is permitted from the outside (change of data, introduction of new data, etc.), this element being optional; an input / output member 24 which is an interface receiving the orders from the pushers A, B, C, it controls the microprocessor and it transmits the information to the multiplexer 25 which displays the information on the display 26. The function of the buttons A, B, C is identical to that mentioned above.
