Abstract

A process for feeding fibres towards the fixed and mobile knives of a fibre cutter, such as a flock cutter, is provided which includes preparing a mattress of fibres aligned in a direction which is substantially perpendicular to the vertical plane of the knife so that the mattress of fibres takes the form of a band. The band is conveyed in a step-by-step manner towards the knives while supporting the band adjacent the fixed knife so that its lower face and its lateral side faces are supported by planer support surfaces having a dimension significant in relation to the length of sections of fibres being cut. The step-by-step conveying is effected by bringing the band to a temporary standstill in relation to the support surfaces as the fibres are advanced towards the cutter.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for entraining fibers in the direction of the fixed and mobile knives of a fiber cutter, in particular a flock cutter.

A- 1 457 318).In all known cutters, the fibers are entrained in the direction of the knives by pinching between smooth cylinders driven in rotation about axes extending transversely to the direction of movement of the fibers, the latter being immobilized temporarily, always by pinching and in upstream of the knives, at the time of cutting (see FR-A- 1 457 318).

This procedure has the drawback of not ensuring regular entrainment of the fibers because, on the one hand, they are only pinched by the cylinders in the vicinity of their generatrices which face each other and that a sliding of the fibers with respect to the smooth cylinders is inevitable, and, on the other hand, that the mattress or ribbon formed by the fibers to be driven is free along its lateral edges. If these irregularities in the entrainment of fibers is of relative importance in fiber cutters cutting the latter into sections of considerable length, they become unacceptable in floc cutters, where the length of the sections of cut fibers is almost always less. to mm.

The object of the invention is to remedy this drawback and to provide a process which allows, which is particularly advantageous for flock cutters, an extremely precise entrainment of the fibers without any slipping of these fibers with respect to the others, over the entire section of the ribbon or fiber mat, so that the cut sections have the same length which remains constant during cutting.

To this end, according to the invention, this method consists in preparing a fiber mat which is aligned in a direction substantially perpendicular to the vertical plane passing through the edge of the fixed knife so that this mattress is in the form of a ribbon, to ensure the step-by-step transport of the ribbon to the knives by supporting said ribbon in the vicinity of the fixed knife, so that its lower face and its lateral faces are each supported by a flat surface whose dimension, taken parallel to the direction aforementioned, is important compared to the length of the sections of fibers to be cut, which is at least of the order of 0.1 mm, the transport step by step and the cutting being carried out, by temporarily immobilizing the ribbon relative to the the aforementioned surfaces and by causing an alternating movement of said surfaces supporting the ribbon in the above-mentioned direction and the amplitude of which is equal to a pitch which corresponds to the length of the fiber sections to be cut, according to the following cycle and considering the movable knife away from the ribbon and the surfaces supporting the latter in their position furthest from the fixed knife: temporary immobilization of the ribbon on the surfaces, fixed one by relative to the other, which support it at least during the entire movement of these surfaces in the direction of the fixed knife to bring downstream of the latter a portion of ribbon whose length is equal to the length of the sections of fibers to be cut, immobilization temporary ribbon in an area between the path of the movable knife and the aforementioned surfaces when the latter have reached their position closest to the fixed knife, cutting of the ribbon by the movable knife, release of the ribbon from the surfaces which support it, displacement of these surfaces to move them away from the fixed knife to their position furthest from the fixed knife, immobilization of the tape on the surfaces and release of the r uban in the aforementioned area, the immobilizations and releases of the tape being adjusted so that the latter is constantly immobilized either relative to the surfaces when it is free in the area, or in this area when it is free relative to the surfaces.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the movement of the surfaces is controlled, in synchronism with the movable knife and from the drive thereof. above, immobilization of the tape relative to these surfaces as well as immobilization of the tape in the aforementioned area.

The method according to the invention is intended for entraining fibers in the direction of the fixed knives 1 and mobile 2 of a fiber cutter, in particular a flock cutter, and it consists first of all in preparing a mattress of fibers 3 which are aligned in a direction substantially perpendicular to the vertical plane, of trace 4, passing through the edge 5 of the fixed knife 1 so that this mattress is in the form of a ribbon 6. The transport of the ribbon to the knives is carried out step by step by supporting said ribbon, in the vicinity of the fixed knife 1, so that its lower face 7 and its lateral faces 8 are each supported by a flat surface 9 whose dimension, taken parallel to the aforementioned direction is important relative to the length of the sections 10 of fibers to be cut, which is at least of the order of 0.1 mm. Said step-by-step transport and the cutting are carried out, by temporarily immobilizing the ribbon 6 relative to the surfaces 9 to avoid any sliding of the fibers 3 of the ribbon on each other during transport and by causing an alternating movement of the surfaces 9 supporting the ribbon in the above-mentioned direction and the amplitude of which is equal to a pitch which corresponds to the length of the sections 10 of fibers to be cut, according to the cycle defined below and considering, as the starting phase, the movable knife 2 away from ribbon 6 and the surfaces 9 supporting the latter in their position furthest from the fixed knife 1 (see FIG. 1): temporary immobilization of the tape 6 (see FIG. 1) on the surfaces 9, which are fixed relative to one another and which support it at least during the entire movement of these surfaces in the direction of the fixed knife 1 in order to bring downstream of the latter, as shown in FIG. 2, a portion of ribbon 11 whose length is equal to the length of the sections 10, immobilization temporary ribbon in a zone 12 located between the path of the movable knife 2 and the aforementioned surfaces 9 when the latter have reached, as shown in FIG. 3, their position closest to the fixed knife 1, cutting of the ribbon by the knife mobile 2 (see FIG. 4), release of the ribbon 6 relative to the surfaces 9 which support it (see FIG. 5), displacement of these surfaces 9 to separate them from the fixed knife 1 (FIG. 6) and release of the ribbon 6 in the area 12 mentioned above when the surfaces 9 have reached their position furthest from the stationary knife and the strip 6 is immobilized with respect to surfaces 9.

According to the invention, the ribbon 6 is immobilized with respect to the surfaces 9 by exerting a pressure regularly distributed over the upper surface 29 of the said ribbon, while the immobilization of the ribbon in the aforesaid zone 12 is carried out by pinching the latter. by resting on the lower 7 and upper 29 faces of said strip, the method according to the invention providing for the adjustment of the amplitude of the reciprocating movement of the aforesaid surfaces 9 as a function of the length of the fibers to be cut as well as the adjustment of on the one hand, the immobilization of said ribbon 6 relative to the surfaces 9 and, on the other hand, the immobilization of the ribbon 6 in the zone 12 as a function of the thickness of this ribbon, thickness which is kept substantially constant .

The ribbon 6 is prepared so that its width corresponds substantially to the distance which separates the above-mentioned surfaces 9 intended to support its lateral faces 8. To optimize the performance of the cutter, the above-mentioned distance separating these surfaces 9 is chosen to be slightly less than the length knives 1 and 2. The reciprocating movement of surfaces 9 advancing step by step the ribbon 6 in the cutter, the temporary immobilization of the ribbon 6 relative to said surfaces 9 as well as the temporary immobilization of the ribbon 6 in the zone 12 are controlled from the drive of the movable knife 2, in synchronism with the latter.

Given the high speeds of the cutters, significant heating occurs at knives 1 and 2 and this heating may be sufficient to agglomerate, or even weld certain fibers of synthetic material. To avoid this drawback, the method according to the invention provides for permanent cooling of the supports 13 and 14 of the expensive fixed 1 and movable 2 supports which are chosen so that they have large contact surfaces with said knives.
