Abstract

Thermoplastic masses which tend to be sticky are cast in vessels having partitions (15, 16) which allow the mass to be removed in individual pieces (11 to 14). The partitions contain a corrugated cardboard core (30) and an outer surface made of silicone-treated paper (31, 32). Furthermore, the partitions have slots (25, 26) which allow them to be fitted together in the form of a star. At its top edge (22), the paper of the partitions is also perforated so that heated air inside the partitions can escape. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a packaging for sticky thermoplastic compositions and to a method for packaging such thermoplastic compositions, such as asphalt, bitumen, tar, thermoplastic marking compositions for the production of lane lines and the like.

Thermoplastic compositions of the aforementioned type are heated before use and then inserted or applied in joints, grooves or flat cutouts in or on road surfaces. The tendency of such thermoplastic compositions to stick strongly depends on their temperature, so that in the morning in northern areas it is not difficult to remove the composition from its shipping container and to comminute it, whereas in southern countries this is problematic.

A packaging for sticky thermoplastic compositions consisting of a container with dividing walls is already known (US-A-2 352 865), the cohesion of the mass pieces being released by separating the sheet metal jacket of the container along a vertical line and then unwinding the jacket becomes. Obviously this is only possible if the container has no bottom.

In practice, barrels with a bottom are used to send the masses mentioned, and the bottom is loosened with an ax, just as the cut is made along a vertical surface line of the barrel. This work is tedious and cannot be carried out cleanly.

To facilitate the removal of bitumen from the associated vessel, it is already known (DE-GM 63 34 605) to make the bottom of the vessel detachable and to tear open the sheet metal jacket of the vessel along the weld seam. The inside of the sheet metal jacket and the bottom are provided with a layer of silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene, which material is known to have a repellent behavior towards adhesives. It is also known to insert a separating web with a layer of silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene in the axial direction of the vessel, so that the bitumen mass is obtained in two pieces when the vessel is torn open.

However, the manufacture of this separator is difficult. Composite material made of a plastic carrier and a layer of silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene is extremely expensive and is therefore not suitable for use as a separation aid. If cardboard or cardboard is sprayed with silicone, it penetrates unevenly, with the result that the separating effect is uneven and the risk is raised of contaminating the mass with cardboard.

The invention is therefore based on the object of specifying packaging for holding thermoplastic compositions and a method for packaging in containers which can be used conveniently, economically and with high reliability, also with regard to the removal of the thermoplastic composition.

According to the invention, the cylindrical or truncated cone-shaped jacket of the container is made of sheet metal and is provided with a tear strip running parallel to the axis, its bottom and any lid which may be present are easily completely detachable, its inner walls are lined with siliconized paper and each partition consists of a core of corrugated cardboard completely covered with siliconized paper.

Sheet metal vessels are thus used, each of which has a detachable base and lid and a jacket wall which can be separated at a prepared location, and also partition walls made of a stabilizing core and a jacket made of siliconized paper.

Siliconized paper is available in good, uniform quality from various manufacturers, and can be detached from the cast thermoplastic compound sufficiently well. On the other hand, the wall thickness of paper is far from sufficient to reliably separate the liquefied mass from one another. Partitions are therefore used which contain a stabilizing core and a jacket made of siliconized paper.

After the thermoplastic mass has been removed from the vessel or the container in which it has been poured, cylindrical pieces with a segment-like outline are obtained which can be relatively easily divided further in order to accelerate the remelting process of the mass before it is used. This also applies to the handling of the pieces in hot climates, in which otherwise larger chunks of thermoplastic mass, such as those that arise after being removed from conventional vessels of a little more than 30 l capacity, can hardly be broken up because of their stickiness. Since four or six or even more elongated thermoplastic bulk pieces are obtained with the invention, these can be cut up by means of an ax or bush knife, even if a certain stickiness and toughness of the mass are already due to the ambient temperature should be given.

The vessel contains a rectangular or slightly trapezoidal sheet metal jacket 2, which is made along a weld 3 to form a closed ring, and a lid 4 and a bottom 5. The lid 4 and the bottom 5 are fastened to the sheet metal jacket 2 by means of straps 6, which are placed around the flange edges of the casing 2 and the cover 4 or 5, as can best be seen from the sectional view in FIG. 2. The ends of the tensioning straps 6 overlap one another, forming a tab 7 which can be lifted with a screwdriver or the like and pulled off with a pair of pliers in order to release the tensioning strap 6.

When the sheet metal jacket 2 is welded along the seam 3, weakening zones 8 arise, which are normally at a certain distance from the seam 3, for example 3 mm. The beginning of these weakening zones is marked with notches 9, so that a rag is formed at the upper edge of the sheet metal jacket 2, which can be grasped with a pair of pliers to completely pull off a sheet metal strip 10, whereby the sheet metal jacket is opened and its interior - a portion cooled down Mass - comes to light.

The serving is in four pieces 11, 12, 13, 14 divided what can be achieved with the help of two partitions 15, 16 (Fig. 3). The partitions 15, 16 each have side edges 21 to 24, which extend so that they fit into the interior of the vessel (Fig. 1). The edges 21 and 22 are therefore generally parallel to one another, while the edges 23 and 24 are parallel in the case of a cylindrical vessel, but have a corresponding inclination to one another in the case of a slightly conical vessel. In the latter case, the outline of the partitions 15, 16 can be described as trapezoidal. The partition wall 15 also has a slot 25, which extends from the center of the side edge 21 in the axial direction to approximately half the distance to the edge 22. A similar slot 26 is made in the partition 16, but this extends from the edge 22 towards the edge 21. The sum of the lengths of the slots 25 and 26 corresponds to the distance of the edges 21 and 22 from each other. The partitions 15, 16 are plugged together due to these slots 25, 26 to form a cross or star. It is understood that even more partitions can be put together in this way to achieve a division into more than four sectors.

The bounded space 1 may include a siliconized paper liner consisting of a bottom portion 17 and a side wall portion 18. The bottom section 17 corresponds in shape and dimension to the bottom 5, so it is generally circular. The side wall section 18 consists of a rectangular or trapezoidal sheet of paper, the edges of which overlap along a strip 19.

The partitions 15, 16 each contain a stabilizing core 30 (FIG. 4), which is surrounded by a jacket made of siliconized paper. A first paper sheet 31 corresponding to the shape and the outline of the stabilizing core 30 and a second paper sheet 32 with a little oversize are expediently used. This excess forms edge strips 33, which are slightly cut at the corners, as shown at 34 in Fig. 4, so that one can fold these edge strips 33 and glue them over the edge of the paper sheet 31.

The stabilizing core 30 consists of cardboard or cardboard, in particular corrugated cardboard is preferred, each having an outer cover layer and a middle corrugated layer. As is known, this creates corrugation peaks and valleys, which are indicated by dashed lines in FIG. 4 at 35. The wave peaks or troughs 35 run parallel to the slot 25 or 26. On the upper side of the partition walls 15, that is to say along the peripheral edges 22, ventilation openings 36 are also provided, i. H. the paper sheet 32 is perforated in the area of the envelope 33.

Proceed as follows to fill the vessels:
The lining 17, 18 is inserted into the interior of the vessel. Thereupon the star formed from the assembled partition walls 15, 16 is pushed into the interior of the vessel and weighted by means of a weight placed over the edge of the vessel. Hot liquid mass, which is kept in a storage container, is then poured into the vessel, paying attention to a distribution in the four sectors. The partitions 15, 16 heat up strongly, so that the air expands inside the partitions, but can escape through the ventilation openings 36. In this way it is achieved that the buoyancy of the partition walls 15, 16 does not become excessively large and they can maintain their shape. When the inside of the vessel has been filled as intended, the mass is allowed to cool. Mass pieces 11, 12, 13, 14 are formed in accordance with the chambers between the vessel walls 2, 5 and Partitions 15, 16. These bulk pieces 11 to 14 are separated by the partitions 15, 16 from each other and connected together.

The filled vessels are sent to the end user. Before use, the end user opens the vessels by loosening the tensioning straps 6 and tearing off the seam strip 10. The mass pieces 11 to 14 are then exposed, but are still held together by the partitions. This cohesion can, however, be easily released because the stability of the partition walls 15, 16 is low and the siliconized paper can be easily removed from the interfaces of the mass pieces 11 to 14. The mass pieces 11 to 14 have an elongated prismatic shape that can be cut into smaller pieces with an ax or knife. In this way it is possible to obtain smaller mass pieces that can be melted faster than large, coherent block pieces.

Partitions 15, 16, which are made with corrugated cardboard with a wall thickness of 1.5 to 2 mm and a basis weight of about 300 to 500 g / m² and with siliconized paper of 90 g / m² (so-called silicone kraft paper), have proven effective for insertion into vessels with a capacity of 30 l will.
