Abstract

A method of producing a silver alloy containing silver in an amount of at least 77 wt.% Ag, 1-7.2 wt.% Cu, at least 0.5 wt.% Ge and B along with any additional components of said alloy and any impurities, which includes the step of fusing pure silver and an intermediate metal composition, which is at least a triple alloy of copper, germanium and boron, for example, 92.5-92.8 wt.% Ag, 6.0-6.3 wt.% Cu, about 1.2 wt.% Ge and 1-15 ppm of boron as a grain refining additive. The resulting silver alloy exhibits good resistance to tarnish and to the occurrence of flame spots caused by the flame and can exhibit significant dispersion hardening with gradual air cooling. In another aspect, the invention relates to a method for manufacturing a copper based intermediate alloy for use in making silver alloy products, wherein the molten intermediate alloy is treated with a decomposable boron compound, such as boron hydride or metal borohydride, before solidification.
