Abstract
In a pay telephone installation several pay telephone sets 40 communicate with a remote central computer 54 via telephone lines and also with a telephone exchange 52 and can be operated using magnetic cards 55, 56, or 57 which contain information or data which can be read from the card and which identifies the card and also represents the amount corresponding to a permissible telephone call. The card 55, 56 or 57 is inserted into a card-taking slot 42 in the apparatus 40 and the data is read off the card and stored in a first storage device which can be addressed from the remote central computer 54 for transmission of the data to this remote central computer, and also can be compared with data transferred from the remote central computer 54 and stored in a second storage device. By means of the comparison the card is identified as a valid or invalid card. Provided the card is identified as a valid card, a telephone call is permitted, otherwise the card is rejected. In a charging device the amount corresponding to the duration of the telephone call is subtracted from the data stored in the first storage device and the reduced amount is stored in the first storage device. At the end of the telephone call the data from the first storage device is written in the card by means of the writing device. On the basis of the data transferred from the first storage device, the remote central computer updates the data in the second storage device. <IMAGE>
