Description

DESCRIPTION
[0001] The invention relates to a coffin for repeated use comprising an outer coffin consisting of a bottom panel, side walls and a cover wherein one of the side walls and/or the cover being formed as a pivotable flap, and an inner coffin which can be inserted into the outer coffin.
State of the art [0002] Such a coffin is described, for example, in GB 2334946 A or in US 2010/0218351 A1. The advantages of such a multi-purpose coffin lie in the fact that, especially for cremations, the inner coffin to be burned can be manufactured from a more cost-effective material such as corrugated board or cardboard which saves resources and costs. At the same time the outer coffin made of high-quality materials provides a corresponding dignified transport capability of the body during the funeral ceremony.
[0003] However, in current multicultural society as well as due to the increasing desire for individuality a standardised outer coffin does not suffice for a funeral home and this is the reason why the known systems are barely deployed in practice. The respective undertaker would have to keep available a plurality of different coffin models which are provided for example with different religious symbols or various other designs to meet the existing requirements. However, in practice this would mean too much effort for the undertaker concerning the storage of the outer coffins and this is why, from an economic point of view, disposable coffins continue to be used. Another coffin is known from US 4337556.
Brief description of the invention [0004] Thus, it is an object of the present invention to provide a coffin for repeated use which overcomes the above mentioned drawbacks and provides a system which is economically feasible for the undertaker and which allows any number of different visual appearances without exceedingly straining the storage possibilities of the undertaker.
[0005] According to the invention this object is achieved in that a decorative shell is provided which is formed to follow the contour of the cover of the outer coffin and can be placed onto and fixed to this, as appropriate. The decorative shell can be made of any material and formed in different designs on the respective outer side. A plurality of single decorative shells is stackable and therefore requires very little space. The decorative shell can be formed very thin-walled since it is applied only to the cover of the outer coffin to customise its appearance to the respective wishes but does not need to include a carrying capacity itself. In a common cover of the outer coffin with bevelled side edges the decorative shell which is formed to follow this contour can be easily placed onto the cover and thus is centering itself over the bevelled side edges on the cover. In this case an additional fixation is not necessary but can also be provided by very simple measures such as magnetic locks.
[0006] According to another feature of the invention it is intended that the decorative shell is made of plastic and provided with a decorative layer such as an overprint or a film. In this manner, the shell can be made very cost-effective, thin-walled and stable. Further, the decorative shell is very lightweight whereby the weight of the coffin is not significantly increased. The decorative shell can also easily be printed partially or fully with any decoration and/or religious symbols etc. or coated with decorative films.
[0007] It is another feature of the invention that the decorative shell is translucent. At the same time, it is a further feature of the invention that the outer coffin includes recesses in the form of grooves or holes in the cover on the outer side in which LED-light sources are located. LED-light sources in the form of individual spots or light strips can thus be arranged on the outer coffin and transillu-minate the translucent decorative shell. In addition, the design options and light effects which can thus be achieved with the individual decorative shells may be multiplied by this measure. Since LED-light sources are very energy saving the supply can be ensured by an autonomous power source which is accommodated in the outer coffin.
[0008] It is another feature of the invention that the pivotable flap of the outer coffin is formed by one of the end walls, preferably by the head-end end wall. It is appropriate to use an end side for inserting and removing the inner coffin as the hinges required for the flap thus can be made very small and optically invisible on the outer coffin. The hinges of the flap may be arranged at the top, bottom or side of the flap. In conventional chapels of rest in Central Europe the head end of the coffin is generally located on the side facing away from those present and facing a wall or altar. Since this side is thus least visible for those present it is appropriate to preferably provide the flap on this end side.
[0009] Finally, it is a feature of the present invention that in the bottom panel of the outer coffin inwardly directed feed rollers or ball rollers are located which facilitate the insertion and removal of the inner coffin through the flap. This measure also barely increases the weight of the outer coffin but makes the handling much easier especially when the insertion and removal of the inner coffin is done over one of the end-side side walls.
Short description of the drawing figures [0010] The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a coffin according to the invention with a removed decorative shell; and
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the outer coffin with the inner coffin pushed out.
Description of the embodiments [0011] The coffin according to the invention as shown in Fig. 1 includes an outer coffin 1 which serves to receive an inner coffin made of inexpensive material. One of the side walls 3 of the outer coffin 1, the head end wall in the example shown, is formed as a flap 4. The flap is pivotable upwards over hinges 10. Further, the outer coffin 1 comprises a cover 7 provided with grooves 8 and holes 9 in which LED-light sources are located. The removable decorative shell 6 includes the contour of the cover 7 and can be easily put over this. A decorative shell made of translucent plastic with an overprint or decorative film is illuminated by the LED-light sources, when mounted. Since the various deployable decorative shells 6 all include the same contour they are easily stackable and can be stored saving space.
[0012] In Fig. 2 the outer coffin 1 is shown with opened flap 4 and pushed-out inner coffin 5. In the bottom panel 2 of the outer coffin 1 feed rollers 11 are located which facilitate the insertion and removal of the inner coffin 5. The coffin according to the invention thus provides easy handling, space-saving storage and a variety in the individualization of the coffin over the decorative shells 6. Further, by use of cost-effective sustainable materials for the inner coffin 5 resources are conserved and costs are saved.
