Description
The invention relates to a foundation element for laying under a shower floor element, which is preferably covered with a covering layer, wherein the foundation element and shower floor element provided with a drainage opening to install a drainage cup A foundation element according to the preamble of Claim 1 is known from DE 20 2009 010056 Ul. In the present case, the term shower floor elements is understood in particular as meaning shower floor elements that are intended to be installed in level-access showers. Such shower floor elements are marketed under the brand name “wedi Fundo” (manufacturer: wedi GmbH, Emsdetten), among other brand names. As a covering layer, the shower floor elements are covered with a tile layer or mosaic layer. In the case of square shower floor elements, a drainage opening for the installation of a drainage cup is located in the centre, meaning at the square's centre of gravity. With the aid of a corresponding downward slope, the wastewater is led there and drains through the drainage cup. Other constructional designs are known, for example round or rectangular shower trays, which can be equipped with corresponding foundation elements. The drainage openings can also be placed at other positions, deviating from the centre-of-gravity area of the shower floor element.
When installing showers with a shower floor element, a foundation, which is usually manufactured as a mortar filler, is formed on a mounting substrate, whereby this term is understood as meaning for example a concrete floor, a thin screed, or the like. In the case of foam-shower floor elements with semi-circular recesses, the drainage cup is inserted beforehand into the drainage opening, which is, however, not precisely adapted to the outer contour of the drainage cup so that the drainage cup also still initially has some leeway in its installation position (cf. article “barrierefreie Duschtassenelemente” [barrier-free shower cup elements] from wediwelt, January 2000).
Under the positions of the shower floor element, a filler is introduced, which is initially made of moist and malleable mortar or a cement-bonded construction material mixture. In this process, cavities are left in accordance with the outer contour of the drainage cup and the drain. After applying the shower floor element, filler is added so that the drainage cup and the drain are embedded in a manner accommodating their shape. Even if the drainage cup is firmly fitting into the shower floor element, as is the case with the “fundo system”, cavities are often left in the filler, in the area of which a lining is lacking.
It is a disadvantage that loosening and leaks can result in the area of the drainage cup and the drain system after the filler hardens and after the shower floor element is subjected to significant stress if cavities remain in the filler or develop over the course of time. In addition, there is also the risk of the filling process not being carried out properly in the area of the drainage cup so that the drainage sinks down over the course of time, thereby resulting in the drainage system no longer being impermeable.
Accordingly, the task is to indicate a foundation construction adapted to common models of shower floor elements, where an exact fitting, height adjustment and permanent impermeability exist right from the start.
This task is solved by means of a construction, which is primarily characterized by a foundation element according to the features of Claim 1 for laying under a shower floor element, wherein the foundation element and the shower floor element are provided with a drainage opening for the installation of a drainage cup and the foundation element, which occupies the entire volume between the underside of the shower floor element and that of the mounting substrate, comprises at least one plate made of foam plastic, which is provided with an opening adapted to the peripheral shape of at least one drainage cup and, correspondingly, with a structured lumen, which extends over the thickness of the foundation element and adjoins the opening.
Thereby, the foundation element takes on the task of the filler, without rework with filling processes or the like being required. The lumen, meaning the inner contour of the opening, is adapted to the outer contour of one or two common drainage cups. When using the appropriately adapted foundation elements when building a shower, the manufacturer of the drainage cups can assume that complications and complaints regarding the installation of the drain can be practically ruled out.
Preferably, the foundation element is made of two or more plates lying on top of one another. Therefore, it is possible to supply the building site with a set of two or more, i.e. n plates, and, depending on the design height, to omit one or up to n-1 plates, for example the top plate. According to this, the foundation element comprises n substantially congruent plates, which are each provided with openings adapted to the peripheral shape of the drainage cups and a divided and structured lumen, which extends over the thickness of the foundation element and adjoins the opening, wherein, in the installed state, peripheral lines and openings of the plates of the foundation element and of the shower floor element coincide.
When using a plurality of plates, the n plates preferably have different design heights. It has proven to be technically favourable if the height of a first (lower) plate is 60 ± 5 mm and the height of a second (upper) plate is 30 ± 5 mm, wherein, however, a determined overall height of 90 mm, for example, should not be exceeded. The height of the plates and their quantity can also vary in the case of other embodiments of the foundation element depending on the design height of the drainage cups. These dimensions indicated as an example are to be varied depending on the product and the manufacturer. A particular advantage is that the lumen of the first plate in the installation state accommodates the outer contour of a drainage cup with a design height of approximately 60 mm, for example, so that said plate can serve as a single foundation element. If, for example, three plates with design heights of 40 + 30 + 20 mm are chosen, graduations in design heights of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 90 mm can be “made use of’.
An expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) or extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) can preferably be considered as a foam plastic for the foundation element. It should be not ruled out that, with the variety of known foaming polymers available, other materials are also suitable for the plates, for example polyurethane foams.
Between the flat sides of the foundation element and the underside of the shower floor element, as well as toward the upper side of the mounting substrate, a durable and long-lasting connection must be established, for example by means of a glue.
According to the invention, at least two separate openings and corresponding lumens are inserted into the foundation element for drainage cups, which (i.e. the lumens and the openings), in the installed state, each coincide with a drainage opening of different shower floor elements and are compatible with corresponding drainage cups. Preferably, there is an opening in the centre with another opening eccentric to it.
Ultimately, the invention also relates to a component set for creating a tileable shower floor, comprising a shower floor element and a foundation element according to one of the preceding claim features and an appropriate drainage system.
An embodiment of the invention is described using the following figure description, with reference to the drawing.

Figure 1 shows a schematic cross section through a shower floor construction 1 that is square in a top view, but without a tile covering. A shower floor element 2, which is made of EPS or XPS plastic foam and is covered with a waterproof coating belongs to the shower floor construction. A tile layer (not shown) is laid and glued onto the shower floor element 2, for example, as another layer. The shower floor element 2 is designed as a single piece in the present case, has a downward slope toward the centre point and an opening 3 there, in which a drainage cup 4 is inserted.
The drainage cup 4 is concentrically equipped with an inner syphon cylinder 5, which serves in a known way as an odour trap. A horizontal wastewater line 6 adjoins the drainage cup 4, which is made of a PVC plastic pipe, which is set on a corresponding connection piece of the drainage cup 4. The shape of the drainage cup can vary and is only schematically indicated here.
In order to avoid the usual build-up of mortar under the shower floor element 2, a foundation element 8 is used for laying under the shower floor element 2, which foundation element is made of two plates, which are at various heights and lying on top of each other, in the exemplary embodiment, namely an upper plate 7 and a lower plate 9. The plates 7 and 9 are congruent with one another in their contour and have the same contour as the shower floor element 2 lying on top.
The upper plate is approximately 30 mm thick and the lower plate is approximately 60 mm thick. In the present case, XPS or EPS foams are provided as material, which have a specific raw density of approximately 35 kg/m and 22.5 kg/m , respectively. Depending on the load and the embodiment, the raw density can also vary.
Figure 1 shows that the foundation element 8 occupies the entire volume between the underside of the shower floor element 2 and a mounting substrate (here not shown). The opening, required for the drainage cup 4, of the underfloor element lies exactly under the corresponding opening 3 of the shower floor element 2. In accordance with a common design of the drainage cup 4, appropriate peripheral and lumen structures have been selected for the opening of plates 7 and 9.
As can furthermore be seen in Figures 2 to 4, the inner sides of the middle openings 3’ and 3” of the upper plate and the lower plate are organized according to the design and the countersinking depth of the drainage cup 4 to be expected.
According to the illustrated embodiment, the opening 3’ is initially circular and sunken at its upper area. Two steps 11 and 12 are provided at about 2/3 of the height, which serve as an underlay for a flange part of the drainage cup 4. The opening 3’ continues on downwards in a tapered manner so that the cup part of the drainage cup 4, which is surrounded by a sealing ring, can lie in the opening 3’ without any additional mortar or glues.
If both plates 7 and 9 are required for a foundation, they are glued to one another. It must be noted the lower plate 9 alone can serve as a foundation element 8 for extremely flat shower constructions. However, for this purpose, it is necessary to lead the connection for wastewater downwards.
The thicker lower plate 9 is provided with the opening 3”, the cross section of which approximately follows a so-called key line. Here too, the outline and the inside configurations are designed in accordance with the periphery of the drainage cup 4 in its lower area. The aforementioned openings 3’ and 3” are milled or punched in. Such material processing methods can also be applied in combination. The tools and work steps necessary are known per se.
If a horizontal wastewater line 6 connection is provided as is shown in Figure 1, a correspondingly wide slot 14 is sawed or cut into the material of the lower plate 9 at the building site.
As can be furthermore be recognized from the figures, the plates are each also provided with another bore hole 23’ and 23”. With these bore holes 23’, 23”, corresponding drainage cup elements that coincide in the case of a congruent position of the plates 7 and 9 can be installed outside of the centre, by means of which drainage cup elements shower water can be received and drained. The opening 23’ has a circular cross section and a wide initial aperture, which converges in the shape of a truncated cone and, customary within the sanitary field, into a hollow cylinder. The opening 23” is designed like a hollow cylinder across its entire height. Thereby, the possibility is established to create a differently positioned customary drain in the shower area. The foundation element 8 can therefore be used in a wide range of shower floor elements to be installed.
In order to make things easier for the workman at the building site, all in all, a component set for constructing a tileable shower floor can also be offered, which set comprises a shower floor element 2, a foundation element 8, consisting of two plates 7 and 9 and an appropriate drainage system.
The suggested elements, in particular the foundation element, can be installed and covered with tiles by a floor tiler. A shower floor construction that can be built very quickly results in an easy and inexpensive manner.
