Description

Process to improve processability and stability of polyvinyl chloride When processing mixtures of polyvinyl chloride and Plasticizers on consumer goods are usually first applied on mixing mills preplasticized. the higher the temperature that can be selected, the faster if the mixtures gelatinize, the mechanical and electrical become better Properties of the articles formed therefrom. Unfortunately, the temperature of the mixing mill now not be increased to the desired level, especially then not if mixtures with a high plasticizer content are to be plasticized. Should Polyvinyl chlorides with the same or even larger amounts of plasticizers on mixing mills processed, you cannot go well beyond 150 'with the temperature, because the gelatinized masses then begin to stick strongly to the rollers. This Gluing is extremely detrimental to the plasticizing process; the crowds hang in tatters on both rollers, with considerable parts of the roller surface remaining in between bright and do not participate in the rolling process. It is therefore not only difficult peeling off a usable hide, but plasticizing also requires a lot Time, whereby the polyvinyl chlorides are damaged by the long exposure to heat. They change color and split off H CI. Apart from these disadvantages The rollers are very dirty and must therefore be used after each rolling process be cleaned again.

It has now been found that the disadvantages outlined can be avoided if a few percent, preferably 2 to 5 %, of polyvinyl ether, calculated on the amount of polyvinyl chloride, are added to the polyvinyl chloride-plasticizer mixture. The temperature of the rolling mill can then easily exceed 150 'without the masses sticking to the roller. Surprisingly, the addition of polyvinyl ether not only allows the mixture to be plasticized at a high temperature, but also improves the stability of the masses. That such effects can be achieved with these additives is all the more surprising since polyvinyl chloride is incompatible with larger amounts of polyvinyl ether. EXAMPLE 100 g of polyvinyl chloride are intimately mixed with 100 g of tricresyl phosphate and 3 g of polyvinyl ethyl ether and adjusted to a temperature of 180 to igo 'on the mixing roller mill. Processed fur. The mixture gelatinizes completely after just 3 minutes, and the resulting skin can be easily peeled off the roller.

The thermal stability of the skin produced in this way, measured by the customary method, is about minutes, ie. H. the fur can be heated to 170 minutes in a stream of nitrogen, until the first elimination of hydrogen chloride, detectable by a silver nitrate solution, occurs. Even with the currently easily accessible Weichinachers, quite satisfactory thermal stabilities can be achieved.

Without the addition of polyvinyl ether, rolling can only be carried out up to a temperature of about 150 '. The resulting pelts only have a thermal stability of 55 minutes.

In addition to the polyvinyl ethyl ether given in the example, you can also other ethers, for example polyvinyl isopropyl ether, or mixtures of different ethers Ether can be used. Also the simultaneous addition of other known stabilizers is possible. The polyvinyl ether must be a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer not necessarily be added before the actual rolling process, but it is it is also possible to mix it in during rolling.

It is. it is already known to increase the stability of polyvinyl chloride compositions by adding stabilizers. Of these, lead stearate and other lead salts have proven to be the best. With 1 it 3 g of lead stearate instead of the polyvinyl ethyl ether, however, when a mixture is plasticized according to the example, a skin is obtained whose heat stability is only 75 minutes.
