Ein Ausdruck der Fax-Nachrichten erfolgt nur bei Bedarf. Ausgangspunkt des Sendens und Zielpunkt des Empfangs ist in jedem Fall der Speicher des Computers. Das Fax-Modem ist dabei nur Mittler zwischen dem Computer und der Telefonleitung. Die Kommunika­ tion zwischen dem Computer und der Gegenstelle wird von einer auf dem Computer installierten Software realisiert, d. h. eine Kommunikation ist nur bei eingeschaltetem Computer und akti­ vierter Sotfware möglich.
