Abstract

Redn. of nitrogen oxides in truck exhaust gases comprises mixing hydrogen as reducing agent with oxygen-contg. exhaust gases from behind the motor. The conversion degree of NOx is up to 100% in excess air region (lambda being greater than 1). The hydrogen is pref. generated in an electrolysis cell carried on the vehicle. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for removing nitrogen oxides from truck engine exhaust gases under normal operating conditions.

Description

A three-way catalytic converter and one have so far been used to reduce nitrogen oxide in vehicle exhaust gases Lambda probe used, which measures the oxygen contained in the exhaust gas and the Combustion of the fuel regulates the required air.

With this new method, the lambda probe can be dispensed with. Instead a hydrogen tank or an electrolysis cell is installed in the motor vehicle in order to Reduction of nitrogen oxides required to provide reducing agents.

The reducing agent is mixed with the exhaust gas immediately behind the engine and then passed over a honeycomb tube catalyst.

The maximum achievable degrees of conversion for NO x are only possible in the previous processes in the range around λ = 1 with an available window of four to five thousandths (W. Handrock Gas Wärme International, Volume 36 (1987), p. 143).

This new method has proven to be suitable, especially in the excess air range (λ <1), to achieve conversion levels for NO x of up to 100% under technical operating conditions in motor vehicles.

Claims (3)

This novel method is characterized in that for reducing nitrogen oxides in oxygen-containing exhaust gases, hydrogen is added as a reducing agent to the exhaust gas stream behind the engine and degrees of conversion for NO x of 100% can also be achieved in the excess air range (λ <1). 2. This novel method is characterized according to claim 1, that degrees of conversion for NO x of 100% can also be achieved for λ <1 under technical operating conditions customary in motor vehicles. 3. This novel method is characterized according to claim 1, that the reducing agent required to reduce the nitrogen oxides either from one Tank or by an electrolysis cell in the car can be made. The one at the Electrolysis resulting oxygen can then be supplied to the engine or but be blown off into the environment.
